We all have furry loved ones where Scout is going.

Yep.

It helps that I have a mini-me fat guy clone laying in my lap right now. Zero-to-purr in less the two seconds, on his back, with no intention of moving. Makes typing a challenge, though.

It does help, doesn't it? Not as a replacement, but it helps fill the void until the memories become sweet instead of painful.

I've always thought that we're incredibly fortunate that they allow us to spend what little time they have on this planet with them. I have to think they take pity on our confused species, and do what they can to help us be more like them.

I wouldn't want to know someone who wouldn't shed a tear at the loss of a companion.

And I thought Monday was rough. Both the docs that we talked to said that the type of bone cancer that she had was very aggressive, and she might have a week with a lot of pain meds, but we didn't think it would be good for her or us to prolong the inevitable. We decided to let her go with a smile on her face, as opposed to letting her linger until she couldn't go on any longer. We spent the morning loving on her and giving her all the attention she could ask for. My best friend and I dug a really nice grave for her in the back yard, and the vet came to our house and put her down as Colleen and I held her. She went very peacefully. As painful as it was, I really don't think it could have went any better. RIP Scout. You'll always be in our hearts.

When Olaf passed I asked those who knew and loved him to write down a few short "Olaf stories" which I compiled into a folder. Every now and again I'll take it out and laugh at what an amazing animal he was. (repeatedly breaking into the fridge, his TV appearance, biting the gas man in the nuts! etc.) It helped ease the pain a bit, and always reminds me of how lucky I was to have had him as a buddy for 13 years.

Sorry about yours and Colleen's loss. Glad to see he isn't in pain any more. Too bad we can't legally go out with dignity like dogs do.

Sorry for your loss. We lost Amber a couple of weeks ago at the age of 14.

Scout was always a scavenger. It was quite possibly one of her most irritating traits. In her younger years you couldn't leave ANY food unattended, or any food on the kitchen counter for that matter. She was super-sneaky. Anyway, fast forward to two nights ago. We had been dog sitting for a friend over the weekend, and it was dinner time. We always fed Scout and Onyx in the living room and were feeding Subotai in the kitchen so we didn't have any food battles or anything. We had to bring Scout's food to her because she was hardly able to get up at this point. She kinda picks at her food a little, not eating much, which was par for the course the last few days. After dinner all the dogs are laying around in the living room, and Scout gets up and hobbles through the living room and dining room, into the kitchen. We went in there to see what the hell was going on, and she was eating the hell out of the rest of Subotai's food! We were laughing our asses off. Scavenger until the day she died! Literally.

Oof. G'bye Scout!

It wouldn't hurt so badly to lose them if they didn't bring such joy and love to our lives. My best to your wife. I'm a basket case when it comes to losing pets. :(
