Around here people can them Indian pipe plant. Some kind of mushroom I think. Not poisonous, but not edible. Think they only "bloom" like that once or twice a year.

I haven't had much luck searching that name, although it's been years since I've tried.

Not a mushroom, but a parasitic plant. They lack chlorophyll, since they get their nutrition by parasitizing the roots of other plants. I also think they're called Indian pipe.

Yup.  Indian Pipe of some sort.  Beautifully elegant.  Fungus.

When I was in boy scouts, I learned about them.  We called them Indian pipes as well.

I believe they were a fairly uncommon plant most places.  I could be wrong on that last point.

The environment at my cabin grows many species of fungus and moss, grass not so much.  Lots of shade on a river, not a lot of trees but the ones I have are large oak, pine and maple.   We have edible oak stump shrooms, a couple large ones that look like tulips and big buttons and a few bright red and orange ones.  Next I need to find out which ones pack a buzz and which ones make you sick.
