My best friend just bought 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 truck and the PO had taken out the muffler and replaced it with straight pipe. Except he used and inch smaller pipe. so it was a bottle neck at that point. He came over and we were going to cut out the section and weld in a 4 inch pipe like it should have been.

4 inch exhaust is HUGE! in case you did not know.

We ended up just taking off the exhaust from around where the bed and cab meet and exited it out the side.

4 inch pipe.

I did the welding. We ran out of gas with the MIG cause the regulator had a leak

Came out pretty good though and was a fun day. It was a much needed hands on car related project.

The pic above is of the crap welds when the Argon mix ran out. So we were welding with no shielding gas and no flux cor wire...i was upset.

Egad. Straight Pipes would get you a free ticket around here.

just grind the ugly welds down and hit it with some high temp paint and it will look as good as you envisioned when you started the project.

I could lay down some nice beads on my scrap practice pipe when i was dialing the MIG in so its not so much lack of skill just lack of gas I was really disappointed almost angry cause thats my name on that pipe and i dont want people thinkin poorly of my work. Unfortunately it had to get done tonight so...

And its loud but not hey cop look here and write me an easy ticket loud.

Also pipe is a monster but the factory was 4 inch too so

Not too loud until he starts dragging a heavy load around and needs full throttle. The welds look better than what 75% or people out there could do. Tractor supply has gas at their stores.

The 4" pipe means it's a Cummins. In PA the turbo counts as a muffling device and would be legal without any other muffler down the line. I still have a muffler on mine though. I want to stay on the good side of my neighbors.

The side pipe should sound nice. Might get some more exhaust smell in the cab when sitting in traffic.

My cummins had no muffler and it wasn't loud. The turbo sounded SWEEEEET at boost and it sounded like a big rig other than that.

Driving a top down car, next to it when it takes off at full throttle, would suck.

Turbos do in fact make excellent mufflers.
