Despite using Roku for the last 6 years, they don't have a good reliability history. I've killed two of the 3 I've orded.
Some worthwhile notes on that topic: refurbished Rokus only offer a 90-day warranty. Buying new from a registered retailer gets you a 2-year warranty.

Well, I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for a used Apple TV until I see the Fire stick go to $20. Whichever comes first...
Thanks for the input everyone!
I paid $27.99 CDN for a Firestick at an office supply store. They must be available in the US for less than that.
Firestick is great for the McBudget. I use an Nvidia Shield on my primary TV and its the bees knees for on the fly transcoding from a NAS.

This makes less sense to me than the Hood Waffles comment in another thread.

I've got a Roku-enabled TCL TV. I like it for the most part. I don't use more than a tiny fraction of what's available, but then I don't watch a lot of TV. Seems to play well with things like Amazon Prime and Netflix, and has plenty of free streaming content as well.
Ditto. TCL-Roku. Fantastic 4K UHD in 55" for $299.
The Roku platform is less... umm... married to commercial interests? I find that I can get nearly any streaming service unlike Apple or Amazon which lean toward their own interests. SWMBO has a Samsung smart TV and it is an either/or thing. You can get Pandora but not Spotify. You can get AT&T-related apps but not FiOS. That sort of thing.
Have a Roku been trouble free for almost 5 years now. Don’t watch much tv but when I do I can usually find something interesting.
