I'm not going into what I hate because it has dogpiled enough in this thread. I will say this though, I don't like how much of a downer rock lyrics have become. Back in the 80s rock was all "don't need nothing but a good time and it don't get better than this." Now it's just a competition to see who can be the most depressed and angsty.

Bubblegum.  It was a little too pop-y for me.

Much respect for him though with his work with Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Third wave ska, aka 90s ska. There are a few gems, the rest is ex-act-ly the same beat note for note.

Led Zeppelin. They are still awesome but there are about 4-5 radio stations in and around Chicago. I'm not kidding when I say I heard Zep on all 5 simultaneously. I'm done with them.

Nu Metal. How quickly were Limp Bizkit forgotten?  Yeah...

Jimmy Buffet. Never understood the appeal. Guess the Greatfull Dead were too serious.

There was a time (pre 1965 or so) that Country and Western were two completely different animals.  Western was artists like Marty Robbins, Roy Rogers, and (to some extent) Jonny Cash.  Country was more like Merle, Willie, Charlie Pride, Ronnie Milsap.

Country is dominated by 2/4 meters:  Tight fittin jeans, smoky mountain range, Ruby, Fancy, On the Bayou... all have a 1-2 feel

Western was dominated by 3/4, 4/4, and 6/8 meters:  El Paso, Folsom Prison Blues, Back in the Saddle.

Modern pop country is almost always 4/4:  Way down yonder on the chattahoochee, The Dance, Friends in low places, I love this bar... all 4/4

Hick - hop, I'm learning some interesting things here.

Interesting note, we live in the sticks, and my Son got married a few years ago. The dance floor was mostly dead until the DJ started to play country. Then it was hopping.

The reason I started this was both because of the recent threads involving music, but when I drive one of my cars it's just a pain to bring and store CD's (it's old) so I listen to the radio a lot. And I change the station a lot. What I'm hearing on the radio these days is pretty depressing. Sure, a lot of traditional classic rock (been there, don't need to go back), the new classic rock (90's/grunge) which I'm still ok with, I think there was a lot of good music made in the 90's, but also on some of the stations some sort of new whiny/pop rock stuff that I can't really put a name on. It's awful, and IMO, has no redeeming qualities. I wish I knew who the bands were but I can't stand to listen to it long enough to find out. Maybe you guys can help me identify this awful stuff.

In some ways we're spoiled here for radio stations, but I've also noticed a few things. Some of the stations are exactly the same. As in playing the same songs at mostly the same time. Money saving for sure. Some of the stations have morphed from old classic rock to new classic rock, and  some of them seem to be just plain confused and have zero continuity, one moment playing grunge, the next playing some easy listening garbage. I don't really get it, but I know about 20 years ago there was a new station model where they did something similar. All the stations had first names (Like Dave FM) but even though they bragged about being different and unlike all the other stations, they just stretched the boundaries of pop. That's not really what I'm seeing here. Maybe it's just a dark day for modern radio music.

For as much as I dislike country, I do love bluegrass.  I don't really get into the old gospel-y stuff, but some of the newer artists (I call it Newgrass) have some awesome music.  Sarah Jarosz, Allison Krauss, Chris Thile and Nickel Creek, Wailin Jennys

As far as really old stuff, I'm not a fan of Baroque and only some classical.  Romantic period gets me though - Debussy, Copeland, Gershwin

I don't have near the hate for bro country as many seem to have. If I'm not actually listening to it and it's just on in the background for noise it doesn't bother me too much. 

But if I'm actively trying to listen to music then there is no chance it's going to be playing.

As a long time radio industry nerd, I think the big change change started with the telecommunication act in 1996.  Thats changed how many stations one company could own (like Clear Channel) and local stations started to disappear.  Many of the stations don't have actual local on air talent.  Its piped in from a central location.  Thats why so many country stations are "Animal Name FM", rock stations are "Z or X Frequency", and there are so many "Dudes Name FM" stations.  You have one or two people that do a little voice work for local advertisers and thats it. People who work in radio want to play different stuff but the suits see the best numbers with the music people who don't really care about music like.  Whenever you are at a gathering and you see people get excited when "Living on a Prayer" comes on, those are the ones modern radio is targeted to.

I don't like sublime, green day or Eminem at all, or most of the soundcloud rappers. I generally like music that you never hear on the radio, Chelsea Wolfe, Sleigh bells and Zola Jesus would be a fee examples.

As I started to read that my first thought was, no the real problem is...  then you said exactly what I was thinking. Around here most of the stations are owned by two companies, and they're pretty much all the same station.

I honestly don't know many folks that listen to the radio or CDs these days. All streaming. Including me. And I'm old.
