What movie franchises are you surprised are not getting rebooted?

Found a streaming service that had Taxi on it, so I settled down to watch for a bit.  Got to thinking when I saw Christopher Lloyd "why haven't they remade BTTF yet?"

And then I got to thinking of other franchises that I'm surprised they aren't milking like a dead cow.

• Back to The Future
• Honey I shrunk the kids
• The Wizard of Oz (there are like a dozen Oz books)
• Godfather

Hollywood doesn't have any shame, so I'm sure it'll occur to someone to do something with them soon, but I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet.

I think Zemeckis has the rights to BTTF and has said a remake won't happen while he's alive.

I'd love to see Dick Tracy see a return, but from my understanding Warren Beatty owns those rights.

I believe you are correct. And frankly, that movie trilogy holds up just fine and there's no reason to remake it. It's a nearly perfect trilogy. 

The only thing the have done since to flush out the story/universe that has helped was the semi-recent BTTF Telltale adventure video game. It's almost like a 4th movie that you can play. It fills in some of the backstory of Doc Brown and some other things, and I believe Zemeckis was involved.  

Honey I (blank) the kids could be regurgitated.   BTTF is a national treasure and shouldn't be messed with.  "The End" was pretty conclusive.

To retain the rights he has to make something with the character, like Fox was doing by making half assed Fantastic Four movies.

So Beatty has made weird web shorts where Dick Tracy and himself are having lunch with the spliced camera effect and another where Tracy is talking to the guy at Turner Classic Movies.

I'm over reboots, remasters, reimaginings, and whatever other synonyms you have for "we're to berkeleying stupid to have an original thought".

Frankly, Hollywood should berkeleying collapse, and the movie industry should just start over entirely with not one single solitary person from any studio being involved at all.

The good news is that there are a few directors/producers/creators who still think this way. (Watching the Oscars reminded me of this.)

I agree that the larger studios have gotten way to comfortable turning out sub-par movies. While I won't hope for a total collapse–there's a lot of below-the-line workers to keep in mind–I do agree that the people in charge need a wake-up call.

Related to the topic, though, I'm not certain about particular franchises, but there are a few standalone films I think are ripe for picking (for better or for worse). M, Bullitt and pretty much any Hitchcock film come to mind.

I have a movie that I legitimately think could be remade: Maximum Overdrive.

Why? Back in the original, every mechanical device magically went red eye. How did a 1970s Mack truck steer and drive itself? Magic, I guess. 

Today, with “internet all things” (plus drive/steer/brake by wire, etc.) I think the original premise could warrant a reboot.

Who to play the lead?

Easy: Emilio Estevez.

There is a single exception - the original Brian DePalma Carrie.  And even that borders on "so bad it's good again".

There's plenty of good material but they keep bringing back stuff.

Any of William Gibsons work would be great as a movie and we have the tech to pull it off.

They were doing a great job of The Peripheral but bailed out halfway thru.

Johnny Mnemonic is so bad that it's good.

I realized I misread the title. 

One of my favorite all time movies is Beetlejuice and they are remaking it, doing a sequel.

The Shining is THE WORST.  So stupid, so boring.  And Jack Nicholson was a terrible choice for Jack Torrance.  From the moment you see him on screen, you can set the countdown timer until you know he's going to flip out.  It should have been Michael Landon or John  Denver or John Ritter or any one of a dozen mild-mannered types.

I will grant you Stand By Me is very good, plus Shawshank, and Misery.  I'll stand corrected on those.

Godfather III pretty much killed that franchise.

Wishmaster is ripe for a reboot since the last one was made 22 years ago. Heck Andrew Divoff could be in it again. There's a whole new crop of horror cameos possible. Keep the same idea of the evil djinn, but update the wishes for modern times. "I wish I could go viral!" Djinn - As you wish! (person dies from some nasty fast moving virus).

Yes the original movie was dumb, and so should be a reboot. There's been far worse crap thrown on the screen the last few years.

I liked the first two Warlock movies.  The third in '99.... eh.

The Usual Suspects is a long-standing favorite of mine. I am surprised they have not done further character development. But I'm probably glad they have not .

Though I think it is a a great movie, it was not a box office hit. It found its success through rental.
