In light of the school closures most of us are experiencing right now I would imagine i'm not the only one looking for something to occupy my kids.  I have 2 boys, 14 & 12, and I would love to find some kind of mechanical project to keep them busy and teach them a thing or two.  I won't always be able to lend a hand so it needs to be something they can work on without me at least some of the time.  One thought I had was to order one of those kits to add a 2 stroke engine to a bicycle.  I like the fact it comes with everything you need and the boys could probably find some direction online when they get stuck on something.  The kit is at the top of what i'd be willing to spend but before pulling the trigger on that i'd like to know what other suggestions you all would have.  What say you?

Teach them to weld and then leave the plans for a Locost laying around?

My 13 year old is avoiding schoolwork by working on several projects:

-  Building an electric guitar

-  Trying to get the 3d printer working reliably again

-  Assembling the Toyota 4 cylinder engine model that was 3d printed awhile ago (to go with the transmission built a couple years ago - all from thingiverse.com)

I guess I'm suggesting an inexpensive 3d printer might be fun.

Good thread!  Keep 'em coming.  I've got a 16 yo that likes cars, and a 14 yo that doesn't.

My boys stripped wallpaper yesterday.   They put off learning how to sweat copper tubing but are gonna learn tonight.  Tomorrow is changing tires.
