So I am watching the football game last night and I see a lease deal for the Toyota BZ4X which gives almost $20k in "lease subvention cash", it claims $4k down and lease payments of $179 a month. I stop at the local dealer and I ask for a price, nothing down (I never want to put anything down on a lease) and they come back at $352 a month 10k miles per year.

This is maybe $75 a month more than I am paying for fuel. My work has free charging for EV's. This seems like one of the cheapest lease deals I have seen for an EV. What is the opinion on this car? I looked at it and it seemed roomy, has a 250 mile range (I commute ~30 miles a day) I am trying to figure out if this is a good choice vs driving a truck that gets 13 mpg on premium fuel and has 155K on it back and forth to work. Other options include doing nothing (which I have done for 4 months and can keep doing), selling my truck and buying a newer truck that can tow the camper (and doesn't require premium fuel, maybe a silverado with a 5.3).

Isn't this a joint venture with Subaru?  Is it more Toyota or more Subaru?    https://www.subaru.com/vehicles/solterra.html

But, in 30k miles what could really go wrong...as long as an EV fits your usage profile.

This is the one that they had HUGE issues with upon release, right?  Like "holy E36 M3, is this Toyota starting to crumble?" level issues?

If so, that was about a year back or more.  They are probably very eager to rehabilitate the car's image and want to get them out there.  Might be able to get an even better deal?

Interesting. I had literally never heard of the car until I saw the ad yesterday. An EV fits my use profile (since I would still need my truck anyway for the camper).
I did look and I'm spending a little over $200 a month in fuel so it doesn't come out to a zero sum but it's not terribly far away from it.

Yeah, if I'm remembering right,  amongst the problems, they couldn't even get the lugnuts sized properly and were snapping them.  Very basic stuff

Wasn't Hyundai doing a give-away lease on their sedan EV (which is likely less popular than SUV style EVs)?

Being an EV, be sure you understand how quickly this car can charge vs the competitors.  I do not own an EV but speed to charge and charging station availability would be my deciding factors.  Access to the Tesla charging network seems paramount.  Speaking of,  Ford now has access to the Tesla chargers, ergo, are there deals to be had on Mustang EV leases?

I will look at the Hyundai thing. I am literally looking for a toaster to commute 25 miles each way. I have free charging at work and easy access to slow charging in my garage. No road trips unless they are local and in range. The Mrs. Has a  CRV that we drive most of the time. I have my truck which won't go anywhere.

They are about a wash. The Hyundai one is 24 months, would come up to about $390 a month.

VW just came off a long stop-sale period of their EV sedan (door handle problems) and the 2025s are here, so they're throwing the 2024s out the door. Some killer lease deals on those. In CO, you can get one for under $40/mo with $1299 down.

In my area (with no state incentives like Colorado) a VW iD4 looks to be just $230 per month ($189 w/ $1k down for 24 months)

It looks like $322 will get you a Nissan Leaf

Man, why can't I find a $40/mo lease in AZ? I'd love one as a kickaround but I've not found any decent deals here.

The Honda Prologue (Chevy Blazer) is one of the more attractive leases right now too if you live in the right states.

The BeesForx is known for being fine. It isn't super competitive with other EVs in the market when it comes to range, efficiency, charging speed, or much of anything else really but it would probably be good enough to handle your usage through a lease term. Long term ownership prospects probably aren't great, but if you're planning on turning it back in after the lease it might work out well.

I know that leases can be enticing for new EVs in the current environment, but I'd be considering buying a used Bolt too.

2017 Bolt with less than 60k miles, comfortably under $9k just be aware that some dealers may be including tax credits, etc in their advertised price while others may not be.

I took a weird left turn in this journey. I guess this is why dealers advertise super deals, make people think about changing and generate foot traffic.

While looking at this deal and thinking I could have the same cost of ownership for 2 vehicles by reducing the fuel spend (to $0) I see a lease special on a Tacoma. Hmm, could I just send the Escalade, get  a Taco and be better off? Well it is darn close. The Taco tows my camper, gets better mileage (although not great) and doesn't require premium. So it save on fuel costs, only one vehicle to deal with it's brand new so it shouldn't break. So I just have to try to put my truck into this deal now because I am not looking to have a new truck and an old truck at the same time and try to unload the old one.

Make sure you take it for a long test drive. My son bought one last year and it was so bad he got rid of it within about 6 months.

His comment was, how could a truck with so many things going for it be so bad?

I had a rental (2024) for a week. Getting in and out was awkward but I liked the truck overall. I got it in Atlanta and drove it to Columbus and back plus around Columbus for a week. Honestly I would rather drive a car but as far as trucks go it was pretty good. If only a Miata could pull my trailers...
