Sorry I don't have a picture either. If I had a picture I could probably find what I'm looking for. 

But I've seen these cubby hole setups, for lack of a better term, for holding coffee mugs. 

I'd kinda like one. But the idea of cutting so much wood to make so many little cubes is a non starter. 

Ideally this would be pass through, meaning no solid back, which makes building at home even now challenging. 

I don't have a local IKEA, but this seems like their sort if thing. 

Actually something like this without the backing piece,  and like 4 feet wide. 

Maybe there's a place I can buy precut boards that just need cut to length and installed?

"Mug display" or "mug storage" also seem to do the trick

I was thinking post office or mail room, because they get filled from one side and emptied from the other, ie no back.

Cube shelf will get you there. There are some cool post office and train station ones on FB. How far is Akron Ohio? This one is from a train station
