Well, I probably only have ten or twelve avocados on the tree. At Dr. Hess's suggested farmer's market price, it isn't worth picking them to sell, so I'll have to find a use for them.. At this point, I'm leaning towards
a) trying to find a guacamole recipe that doesn't suck
b) trading them with the neighbor for star fruit to use in a pear and star fruit salad.
You can make a tasty ice cream out of them.
Aren't they one of those fruits that can hang on the tree for months but won't actually ripen until picked? No hurry then to eat them.

I prefer my avaquado's smashed up and spread on anything.
I look at people posting about their avocado trees, working year-round in shorts and flip flops, and I wonder why I live in Wisconsin.
Then I go to my decent job in manufacturing and realize that good manufacturing jobs are less frequently found on trees than avocados. Such is the life of the person that went to school to work in a rust-belt industry.

That's something I'm wondering.....how do I know if they're ripe. If ^^^this is true, there's no problem with accidentally picking unripe ones. I may pick one tonight for use in the lab tomorrow. (We're having the kids test different foods for fat content....it would be kind of cool to have them use my avocado instead of a store-bought one.
My favorite Avocado sandwich is
Good quality grain bread,
Fresh roasted chicken cooled,
Sliced avocado,
Mayonaise,
Mild Cheddar cheese slice
No butter, salt and pepper to taste
Cut it in half, remove pit, add Louisiana Hot Sauce, spoon, yummmm.
Avocados are my Frank's Red Hot.
You can pretty much substitute an avocado for anywhere an egg is called for. Its a bit difficult to say that its an even swap since water content, carbohydrates, and other factors are different, but nutritionally speaking, its basically the same as one chicken egg.
It makes a killer ice cream. They are very healthy bowls in which you can put salads. I often times use a smashed avocado instead of mayo to make tuna salad or chicken salad. One can of tuna, one avocado, and maybe some mustard or diced onion.
I really like them just sliced and then I mix up the juice of one lemon, a tablespoon of mustard, and a drizzle of olive oil. You can also add avocado to the blender/processor of any vinaigrette to make it a creamy dressing.
My wife and I also make SBLAT sandwiches. Its like a BLT, but add sprouts and avocado.
It took my wife years to appreciate the avocado. Now she eats more of them than I do.
For breakfast: one avocado, two hard boiled eggs, four strips of bacon, a roma tomato and some fresh lemon juice. Dice up everything, throw it in a bowl, squeeze lemon juice on it. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
For guac: one avocado, one roma, one small jalapeno, some red onion, lime juice and a bunch of salt. I prefer a high veggie to avocado ratio, almost like pico de gallo with avocado in it.
My chilean grandmother makes a shrimp-stuffed avocado recipe that is just incredible.
Turkey, bacon and avocado is my go to sammich.
I could also eat my weight in guac.
I think in some cultures avocado is considered a fruit. I like some chopped up in a bowl and pour some sweetened condensed milk on top or make some kind of milkshake out of it.

If they were cheaper, I'd eat about 50 a week.

If you lived here and planted a few trees, you could.
[still hoping that a GRM staffer chimes in with the avocado/t-shirt exchange rate so i know if it is worth a drive to the coast]
Not an avocado fan.
I have a few ideas though...

this is the best idea so far in this thread!!!!!!
[I wonder if I should also replace his trucknutz with a pair of over-ripe avocados]
Saute' onions and garlic in olive oil, pour over Avocado cubes and spoon onto crackers.
Swap them for beer?
I have a feeling the only people that would enjoy both avocados and beer would only have PBR on hand for trading.

I don't drink, guys.
BTW, I picked one, and it is as hard as a rock. (right now, the trebuchet ammo sounds reasonable) Gertrude doesn't know what to do with it, either.
I LOVE this sandwich. I whipped it up one day after finding some random stuff in the fridge:
Sourdough bread
Olive oil
Cracked Black Pepper
Shaved turkey breast
Prosciutto
Green peppers
Monterrey jack cheese sliced
Avocado
In a small cup, mix a 1/4 cup of olive oil and a pinch of cracked black pepper. Place a spoonful of the mix in a skillet and heat it up. Grille some sliced green pepper, prosciutto, and turkey in the oil until it starts to get crispy. brush the sourdough bread very lightly with olive oil and cracked pepper, and grill until it gets crispy. Place meat/peppers on the bread and add a few slices of the cheeses. Slice the Avocado and place several slices on top of all that. A smear of mayo or honey mustard, and enjoy!
You may have picked it a bit too early, although the green ones don't get as soft.
My recommendation would be to use it as a substitute for mayonnaise.
