I'm heading to Portland for work tomorrow and I'll be done working by 3:30. What cool stuff is there to do. Automotive related and not.
Cool drives?
Good museums?
Good eats?
Good music?

Visit this place. I'm not sure how they came up with that name...
I took this pic in Oct 2001, so it was a legit business in Portland.
The wife and I just got re-married at Voodoo Doughnuts
The Japanese Gardens are nice.
Powells Books.
The Alibi tiki lounge. Sipping a mai-tai while listening to drag queens sing karaoke, it doesn't get more Portland than that.
Do you like books? There is a bookstore there that takes up an entire city block: Powell's city of books
There's also a GRMer with a Jalpa that should be getting ready for an engine install
Cheers!
I'll third Powells books.
The old Columbia River Gorge highway is a very scenic winding road with tons of great waterfalls right off the roadway including Multnomah. Some great 1 mile hikes there.
Japanese Gardens are great. I've hear Chinese gardens are too but haven't been inside.
Food - Rip City Grill. I really enjoyed Ava Gene's for some fancy Italian. You really can't go wrong in that city though.
Coming from Detroit, I thought Voodoo Donuts was very overrated.
Voodoo is over rated and since it us a cash only business you have to run through a gauntlet of panhandlers to get in and out. For what? A donut covered in cap'n crunch that will cut up the roof of your mouth.
I just went to pdx yesterday. I opted for lunch at Nong's kho man gai, a stop at old town music and some beers on the back patio at the rose and thistle. It was a very good day.
If you must do the PDX donut thing Pips, followed closely by Blue Star, are where you're going to want to be.
Traffic will be E36 M3 by 3:30, but World of Speed might be worth the hassle of the Wilsonville E36 M3show.

Less than 40 miles from the airport. IF I have the time, I'll be there!

Make the time. Seriously.
You can take the back roads to avoid some of the traffic.
Traffic will suck as the weather will be awesome and people will be heading home early and/or picking up their kids, etc. so plan to do something within walking distance/light rail or just head out as soon as possible and use Google Maps to try and avoid some of the worst of the traffic.
Widmer pub off of the Northbound MAX (light rail) just past the Rose Quarter transfer is pretty nice.
Portland City Gril on the 30th floor of the US Bank Tower is a pretty awesome place for happy hour/dinner.
Thirsty Lion Pub downtown is also a good place to grab a bite and a pint.
If you want good wings/pizza/beer head over to Fire on the Mountain (they even have vegan options if you roll that way)
Even just wandering along Waterfront Park or Forest Park would be great given the great weather we're expecting tomorrow.
McMenamins Edgefield is a pretty good place to hang out and it's on the way to or from Multnomah Falls, which is also worth the visit.
I'd try to meet up and buy you a beverage, but I have to pick up the baby, the wife, her car and find time to work in there someplace. I'll have more time Tuesday or Wednesday though, if that's an option.
I'd suggest taking a drive up The Old Columbia River Highway, but they had a land slide recently, so that isn't really an option.
OMSI on the East side of the river is a pretty neat science museum to visit and there's a train museum next door (not sure of the hours, so check that out if you're interested).
In reply to bastomatic:
Voodoo Donuts IS overrated, but they at least try to be different.
Note: I didn't say, good. Just different.
The exception is their bacon maple bar, but it's not worth standing in line for one.
Basically, it's a novelty thing for tourists, you can get donuts that are as good or better without all the goofy E36 M3 on it from a local grocery store.
The fact they haven't opened a location at the airport shows they are just fine with being "Weird" and not really doing anything to grow the business further.
X2 on OMSI - especially the submarine. Nothing says tight spaces like a 50's diesel sub.
Before or after seeing Multnomah Falls, hike Eagle Creek trail.
Rent a bike and ride into/around Forest Park.
Urban Farmer restaurant in the lobby of the Nines Hotel.
I bought my Mazdaspeed Miata in Portland. Drive out to Multnomah Falls is really pretty. They don't let you pump your own gas in Oregon though, and the chimp working the pumps put a dent in it right by the fuel filler the day after I picked it up. There was a Voodoo Doughnut place a few blocks from the motel where we stayed. Meh, they were okay.
Ok, so I have twice as many things to do as I have time for.
I'm out here training a shop, maybe I'll just drop off the handouts and skeedattle.
Prost is always a good time if you're into German beers. It also has a patio and is in the midst of a food truck pod. They're happy to let you eat outside food on that patio as long as you buy a beer.
Also you need to drink water from out of any public drinking fountain either downtown (or even at the airport). "But Sparky - why", you ask? Because the water actually tastes great. It comes from the sweat of 1,000's of fairies! They live up on the flanks of Mt. Hood in secret caves.

It is only Tuesday.... that leaves 2 1/2 days - What would you like to do?
I could make part of a day or so free... AE86andKP61 has a shop in north portland where we are swapping a Blacktop into an AE86...
I'm currently between clients, but if you'd like to see my hovel/workspace....
Have you enjoyed the legal MJ? (understand if you can't because of testing)
You'll need to log in to post.
