Work has called me down to St Louis Tues-Friday.

Anything worth venturing out to see in the evenings?   I'll be about 20minute west of downtown.

My info is a little out of date, but others may chime in. It's worth going down to see the Mississippi and the Arch, even if it is too late to go up in it.  That area is kind of pretty and worth a walk around; you can go down and dip a toe in Big Muddy and watch the barge traffic.

Right near the Arch is an area called Laclede's Landing, which used to be pretty hip. That was the place with the good bars and live music.

Forest Park is between where you'll be and Downtown.  It has a nice zoo, and it's a pretty park, but again, not sure about evenings for the zoo.

Near the east end of the park is the Central West End, home of trendy but good restaurants.

Near the west end of the park is University City. Delmar Avenue from Skinker west was a pretty decent little funky section.  There was a good art house cinema and a good place called Blueberry Hill. 20 years ago you wouldn't have wanted to go east of Skinker on Delmar, but that may have changed.

If  you had kids in-tow I'd say definitely check out the city museum. Even as an adult it's super cool.  I don't remember much about the acutal historical stuff...but it's essentially a 5(?) story obstacle course with slides, tunnels, and cool mazes to explore.  I did climb up to the airplane and crawl through the sketchiest things (not my picture below).

Get dinner on the Hill.  Everyone has "their" favorite place but I like Zia's and Favazza's, Rigazzi's is a good one also and famous for the "fishbowl" giant drink.

If you can get their before they close for the day the Zoo is really great and Free.

My Mom speaks highly of the Art Museum.

Look up the City Museum and see if you think it would be something you would enjoy.  It's a bit "Kid focused" but it's INSANE and a neat walkthrough for kids of all ages.

The Busch Stadium (Cardinals baseball) District is neat if you are into that sort of thing.  The Busch brewery tour is kinda neat but very touristy now.

Also..  St Louis style Pizza.  It doesn't have "Cheese" on it, it has a US Government Recognized Cheese themed food product called Provel.  I think it's delicious (Sometimes), Some people HATE it.   It's unique and not common everywhere.   The crust is somewhat unique as is the sauce.  Again worth a try for the experience.

My sister used to live on the far west side. Business travel to me means business meals/dinners. Just know the Little Italy Area of St. Louis is known as The Hill. In years past, my sister took me to some good dinners there but the specific restaurant name escapes me. Locals should have a recommendation for The Hill.

Edit: there you go, two recommendations for The Hill at the same time. Ha.

Watch your speed!

I have a distinct memory of a speeding ticket on a west to east hyw west of the brewery. It was a major operation. You come over a crest and motorcycle cops were lined up, already radioed to, launching to pull you over.

Dan, your post was excellent up until you spewed that mouth vomit about the pizza. Ironically, one of the ingredients of the pizza is vomit.

Visit the world's fair.

And screw Italian food and pizza, get ribs. Yeah they're not baby backs, and it's not Memphis or Kansas City, but there's still excellent barbeque to be found in St. Louis.

I mean options for ribs finished with a roofing torch, or ribs finished via flash frying.

YES to dinner on The Hill.  I think we used to go to a place called Charlie Gitto's?  Don't quote me on that.

BIG FAT NO to any pizza in St. Louis.  You may find an edible place but the risk just isn't worth it.

Buy a rust free car, that's what I did.  My 2001 GMC Savana made it from there to GR in one tank full.  When inquiring I asked if the got much snow there.  They replied "Oh yeah we have winter here" I picked it up in Febuary, they had clear roads and green grass.

The under side was absolutely spotless.

Go for it. Imagine the exact middle of Provalone, swiss, and velveeta. But the worst part of all of those. And it's not cheese.

There is decent pizza in St. Louis, but it is not what is known as St. Louis pizza. Anything that Provell cheese touches has become disgusting.

Other things I enjoy there:

  • Pappy's BBQ
  • Ballpark Village. Basically an indoor mall, but instead of retail stores, there are bars. Only downside is all the Cardinals stuff all over.
  • Anheuser-Busch tour
  • Schlafly tour
  • Waffle House

STL resident here

+1 million on eating on the hill.  I can personally recommend Charlie Gittos, Carnivore, and Antonino's Taverna.  Zia's is also good, have gotten carryout from there.

Antoninos has fantastic pizza - but it isn't "St. Louis" style

On Friday nights, the Sonic at the corner of Lindbergh and Big Bend is a popular cruise spot / car show

If you're looking for something other than Italian, there are some good BBQ restaurants

Salt and Smoke
Pappys

if there is a type of food you're specifically looking for - let me know and hopefully we can get point you in the right direction.

I don't know if Union Station is still a thing, but it was nice when we lived there.  They effectively built a modern mall under the restored glass train shed of an 1880s train station.  The mall is a mall, but it's a nice space to be in, and there is a pleasant biergarten there to hang out.  Located a few blocks southwest of the downtown / Arch area.

Second vote for Ted Drewe's Frozen Custard for a concrete.  Not much else in that area, though it's not too far from The Hill IIRC.

Oh, I understand.  I'm just trying to save you from yourself and lend you the benefit of my mistakes.

Imagine the worst frozen pizza you ever had, topped with melted Old Navy $2 flip flops, on a crust somewhere between a tortilla and a matzoh.  Cut in squares so it's a complete mess to eat.

Mmmm, love IMO's pizza. Grew up on that stuff. Always have some when I go back to STL.

you want Italian food, go to the Hills

Ted Drew's frozen custard is excellent. Can't go wrong with that.

You like flowers? Go to the Botanical Gardens.

you like zoos? Go to the STL zoo and see the 1904 Flight cage (aviary) from the 1904 World's Fair.

Another good frozen custard place is Fritz's frozen custard.  We like it better than Ted Drewes.

Also, I forgot about Union Station.  It's pretty cool, and there is a nice aquarium down there also that was just recently finished.

There's a reason why St Louis style pizza is as it is, it's a scientific formula designed to bind up your colon the perfect amount to counteract the loosening of said muscle from over consumption of cheap beechwood aged rice lager.

You'll notice that no one is recommending anything on the East Side of St. Loius; the Illinois side, but...

Over there , only 5 miles into Illinois from The St. Louis Arch, is Gateway Racetrack (roval) and Drag Strip.  Seem they now call the place World Wide Technology Raceway.  They look to hold the last two Wild Weds Oct 20 & 27.  Do you travel enough to be bumped up to a performance rental car?!?!?!?
Even if not, you can make any rental car fast.

$35 to race, $40 at gate
$15 to spectate, $18 at gate

Gates at 5pm, racing at 6pm.  We ran there for One Lap of America. Nice, safe place.

No helmet required for cars under 13.99 seconds

The site goes on to say:

Please note that no passengers will be permitted, and helmets are required in any new muscle cars:

  • Any AMG Mercedes along all trim lines including some of the SUV’s
  • Any M series Model from the mM2 to the M8 including the M series SUV’s
  • Any Audi RS series from the RS3 to the R8
  • Mustang GT or above trim level
  • Camaro SS or above trim level
  • Charger/Challenger 396 trim level or above
  • STR8 Cherokee
  • Corvette
  • Any Tesla including SUV
  • Kia Stinger
  • Infinity G35/G37
  • Nissan 370z
  • New Supra
  • Subaru WRX STI
  • VW Golf RS
  • Ford Focus RS
  • All “Supercars” Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston martin, ETC.
  • Please note: as of 12/31/2021, the Snell 2010 helmet expires, so If you are buying a new helmet, we recommend getting the most current one, which Is Snell 2020.

This list seems to say to me to avoid the Mustang GT and Camaro SS but a V8 Charger (not 396) should be good.  Kia Stinger is there but Genesis G70 is not?

Just cause I was curious, Car & Driver says a V6 Charger still puts down a 1/4 mile time of 14.7 sec.  That's what V8's of the '90s put down!
The 4cyl turbo Mustang puts down a time of 13.7.  That's probably a prefect pick to keep you just right under the 13.99 mark (assuming you're not a drag race pro.)
