I'm flying out to Portland tomorrow for a software conference with 4 co-workers. We'll have most of the day Wednesday to see/do whatever. Is there anything other than Mount St. Helen we should go see? Someone mentioned going to the beach (Cannon or Rockaway) but we're not sure what there is to do at each place and what the weather will be like.

If you go east there's pretty cool stuff - waterfalls with trails up to the top - Multnomah Falls, Mt. Hood. Or heading west toward the coast, there was a little airport with glider rides just outside of Beaverton. McMinnville has the evergreen air museum - the spruce goose is there along with some other rare stuff like a messerschmidt bf109 - good way to kill a good chunk of a day. If you like wine, bunches of wineries around there too. Last time I was there we just were walking around downtown - caught one of the last George Carlin appearances at a theater. I like Oregon a lot, although the restaurants in Portland seem to try too hard - tough to get simple food there.
McMenamin's Edgefield in Troutdale is a great place to stop on the way to/from Multnomah Falls. Great food, great beer and wine, lots of history, there's even golf (if you're so inclined)
Old Columbia River Highway is a more enjoyable way to get to the falls, but I84 works just fine.
If you're at the Convention Center, there isn't much around there that is interesting.
If you jump on I-5 headed north, you'll see signs for Expo Center, Delta Park and Portland International Raceway. (you can also take the Yellow line MAX from near the convention center right to the track) and it looks like PIR will have Super Sport racing during the day and NHRA Drags in the evening.
There's also Portland City Grill on the 30th floor of the US Bank Tower. Great views at night and good food.
Thanks for the suggestions. We're at the Hilton on 6th Ave. We ended up going to MSH - amazing and worth the drive! Got reservations at Ringside tonite for some steak. Don't know if we'll have time to see or do much else unless we decide to skip some conference sessions.
If you're into planes, space, or history, definitely check out the Evergreen Museum. If you don't have that kind of time you can always find Bryce and his AWD twin-engine, hybrid Fiero in Portland. Not much happens on Thursdays though if you're here the weekend there's autocrossing at PIR and drag racing Friday night.
Drink the coffee, report back. Is it that good?
