Since my neighbor sent me an email to join him on Linkedin, I've been receiving requests from strangers also. I decline or ignore them all.

Now I find that at least once a week I get a "reminder" that so and so sent me a request on Linkedin.

How do I block these emails? I could just direct them into the junk email file, but I'd rather not fill up my space.

Please use small words, and pictures help a lot, computers and I don't always see eye to eye.

Thanx, Dan

Send them to junk and then delete them right then. That way they don't fill your space. I rarely get something past my junk filter and the junk filter rarely junks something I want.

A lot of those emails have a unsubscribe link at the bottom. Occasionally the link even works.

Yeah, I suspect this is a good call for the linked in stuff... With random spam any sort of reply is just confirmation that they've found a real address, so just delete. But for "legitimate" if annoying stuff like linked in, I'd either hit the unsubscribe link, or there may be one to change your settings so you can specify which, if any, things you still want to receive from them.

But most of those unsubscribe links on the emails (and the junk faxes) only validate that they have a real address and it increases your spam.

If it's a legitimate Nigerian type scammer replying in any form validates the address.

Don't allow your mail program to load images. Sometimes they put something as small as a one pixel image that needs to be loaded. This way when you open it they know they have a good address.

I send the email to my email provider (they all have a way to report spam) and also to the govt. I'm betting that spam@uce.gov doesn't do me a lot of good, but while I'm sending - I might as well.

Then I bounce them. Many will say that spammers use fake addresses and don't care about bounces, but somehow that gets rid of my spam in only 3 short months.

Many of the spammers will immediately send you another spam the instant you bounce one so you have to be prepared to bounce 2. If they didn't pay attention to bounces you'd never get the responder spam after you bounced so this is proof bounces matter to at least some spammers.

I've been fighting a persistent set of 4 spam emailers for just about 3 months now. They send 3 sets of emails a day. One at 12:00 noon, @ 12:00 midnight and another seemingly random time of the day. Friday is the first day I've been spam free in months. If the past is any indication then I'll stay spam free for probably no more than 6 months and then my email addy will be sold again.

Apple allows you to have a number of throw away email addresses piggy backed upon your real address. I make up a new one when I'm going someplace new and if spam develops I get rid of that email address. It's not really any trouble since Apple makes it so easy to receive my mail. It's piggy backed on my real email addy so I simply delete the alias and alls well again.

As far as Linkdin goes you'll need to call the person who linked you in and tell them to remove the invite. From the number of bad experiences I've heard about people having with Linkedin I'm afraid to unsubscribe as that might start another cycle of spam.

I use Eudora for my e-mail. I have some filters set up (any message containing "free credit report" , etc) that send those messages to the junk mail without even showing them to me.

Then I have it set so that when I close Eudora any message in Junk Mail is automatically deleted. I can always look in Junk Mail before I close the program if I think something might have gotten there by mistake.

I send replies back with other spam email address I've gotten, and promptly block the email addresses from getting to me... they can spam each other!

And how do you make your replies look like they came from somewhere else?

You'll need to log in to post.
