What games do you like playing? I could reccomend tons of stuff.
Make sure to get an Epic Games account. Every Thursday they give away a free game. I have well over 200 games that I didn't pay a dime for. Some suck, but some were a A-list titles that were a hoot.

One of those games not too long ago was Jedi: Fallen Order. Thats how I got it for free. But I haven't played it, I'm eager to hear what it's like.

I'm all over the map is the problem. I like really diverse styles and genres. I lean more towards RPG's and FPS than beat-em-up action.
Rather than genre - I'd say games that have a central theme or idea that they have a solid focus on and mechanics that support that.
So, for favorite games/series but without particular order:
May make it onto the list, but need some more time to digest to decide:
Honorable Mentions:

Death Stranding ended up annoying me too much. I didn't have an issue with the core mechanics or gameplay loop. That was fine. I got really tired of the interminable cut scenes. Someone needed to tell Kojima to trim some unnecessary fluff.
Last of Us is something I should look into. Looks like it's releasing on Steam... tomorrow.
Same here with Death Stranding, I think I MAYBE made it 2 hours in and was like, "Nope this isn't for me."
Are you talking computer gaming or console? My big sim rig is basically all for racing games, the PS5 is for the other stuff although I mainly just play NBA on it. Haven't really messed with the free Gods of War:Ragnarok, or the remastered Hitman triology yet.

PC.
Nier: Automata is another one that I ended up putting down. I beat the first playthrough. It was fine. Quit partway through the Route-B playthrough because it was retreading a LOT of old ground, and the playstyle of the second character was not fun. All the reviews raving about how deep and philosophical it is, I didn't buy. It felt pseudo-intellectual and pretentious. Much like Death Stranding, not as smart as it's busy trying to tell you it is.
I played Hitman 3. Moderately enjoyable. Not sure it's quite my speed. I enjoyed the levels and gameplay, but they put a lot of effort into relatively few levels, and I did not have a strong desire to keep replaying them to complete objectives.
For PC gaming, I've got more hours into Diablo II and the LoD expansion than anyone has a right to invest into a game. It's ancient but the story and gameplay is still addictive.
For non-pc gaming, on the switch I've gotten ridiculous value from:
Dicey Dungeons
Katamari Damacy
Steamworld Heist

How many of Arkane's games have you played? Dishonored (1 and 2), Prey, Deathloop?
Ctrl Alt Ego is a neat little indy game.
I'll +1 on Outer Wilds (which is a totally different game from Outer Worlds). Super fun game that's really hard to describe without spoiling it.

Played the demo for Prey. Haven't played the others.

Okay... that looks cool. I enjoy some good mystery/discovery with some decent mental challenge to it. Really enjoyed both Return of the Obra Din, and Heaven's Vault.
If you like old school beat-em-ups, play Streets of Rage 4. It's so good. Deep gameplay, tons of replay value, unlockables, great soundtrack, and more. It's addictive once you get into it, especially trying to chain combos and keep them alive. The easter eggs that refer back to the old games are awesome, including being able to unlock Streets of Rage 1, 2, and 3 characters with their original graphics and movesets. The DLC is great, too.
More fun games I've played recently:
-Broforce
-The Steamworld Dig games
-Loop Hero
-Chrono Cross (via the Chrono Cross: Radical Dreamers Edition)
-CrossCode
-Timespinner
-The Borderlands games, especially 2, the Pre-Sequel, and 3
-Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

That price is hard to stomach though... Steam sales are so good. Spring sale should be really soon right?
Same company did "Nobody saves the world" last year and I thought it was fantastic.
Recently beat Evil Within 2 and Returnal.
Returnal had an absolutely brilliant story, but very, very unforgiving gameplay. I spent about 3 weeks getting through one level (in retrospect, it was the hardest level in the game). I think Returnal might be a victim of it's own difficult. Based on Steam achievement stats, less than 40% of players make it to the midway point of the game. Though it's a rogue-like, very few stats carry over into your next playthrough, which means you're essentially starting from square 1 every time.
Evil Within 2 was brilliant, improved on the first game in every way; better graphics, better gameplay, better weapon variety. Little bit of a head scratcher as to why it wasn't well received on launch. It's good enough that I'm getting ready to play through it a 2nd time

See, games like that are no fun for me. I'm playing video games to relax at the end of the day or weekend, not want get so frustrated I want to smash the controller into the TV.
Based on Steam achievements a good number of players never even start many games, so that 40% number might not be that significant.

katamari reroll 2 in June!

For boomer shooters, have you yet tried DUSK? I can HIGHLY Recommend that.
Also, oh man Katamari. That game and it's soundtrack are an antidepressant. One of the greatest soundtracks of all time.
Octopath Traveler is available on PC now, it's also on GamePass if you happen to have that. Old school pixel RPG with great music, and some fun systems.
I've been playing the mobile game which is also pretty decent, it's one of my dailys and a bit of a gatcha game, but you can F2P pretty decently.
The second one just came out last month as well if you like the first.
In reply to LifeIsStout :
I have the 1st Octopath on the Switch. It's pretty good, and simple and straightforward for a JRPG. Graphics are super cool, too.
If you somehow missed Portal, they recently added ray traced graphics to it, making it a bit creepier and less cartoony.
Tried Jedi: Fallen Order and decided I was "meh" about it. Not bad, but felt kind of flat.
I am now playing Hi-Fi Rush and am loving it. It's basically a combination beat-em-up fighting game hybridized with a rhythm game. So you need to get in a flow and execute attacks, dodges, parries, etc. with the rhythm of the music.
It's stylish. It's humorous. It's FUN.
The combat keeps ramping up and getting more challenging, but does not feel punishing or tedious or anything. It has a solid difficulty level that challenges me, and I know I'm not making efficient use of all the mechanics, but I'm not getting constantly curb stomped because I need to Git Gud.
It allows me to jump in as I have time, play for as long as I feel like, and log back off again. It respects my time and
I highly recommend it.
I need to suggest 'Sir Whoopass'. The easiest way to describe it is 'Skyrim meets Duke Nukem'
It is graphically very nice. It runs very smoothly on my PC.
It does not take itself seriously. Very tongue in cheek and knowingly 4th wall breaking. Voiceover is done well, the narrator is funny. The scripting plays at many video game industry tropes and has fun with it. Everything is over the top because it can be. It has *some* dark humour to it but very tame. Again, it very much knows it is a game and plays into that.
The controls are a *bit* clunky to get used to (can probably remap them but I have less than an hour invested and they became fluid quickly)
I am doing a playthrough for YouTube and did about 45 minutes for the first episode, further episodes will be an hour as it's a game that I *want* to play more of. My biggest complaint is the soundtrack, which is more so its a REALLY good harder rock soundtrack I don't get to listen to because the developers said it's licensed from a company and if you are a content creator they recommend either getting a license with the sound company or playing without the music. I am not monetizing it BUT copywrite music on YouTube goes one of two ways: They monetize it (which is fine, ads but I get no money) OR they pull the audio completely (no bueno, no voiceover or sounds at all), I so I er on the side of caution.
I am highly recommending it based on the fact that its just *fun*.
Apparently we had a canoe bump this to the front page. Fortuitous, really. It's making me wonder whether there's a game I could find on Steam for Mrs Donohue to play. She's not a gamer, but we used to enjoy playing cooperative games together. I'm thinking a game she can play on her own for maybe twenty or thirty minutes at a time might be a good way for her to escape and decompress after a full day of wrangling a preschooler.
Does anybody have any recommendations for something that can be played on a modest laptop? Preferably something colorful and cartoony, something that allows fairly unstructured exploration, and doesn't have any combat or really tough obstacles to overcome.
Thoughts?
