So I was doing an oil change on our RAV4, first 4 qts were Penzoil Platinum 5W-20.  I started filling with the next jug, which was a partial one.  Quickly stopped as the color seemed off.  I got into some better light and realized the jug had waste coolant in it!  I'd estimate less than a quart (and probably half that) was introduced into the crankcase.

I immediately pulled the drain plug and drained the oil/coolant mix.  Refilled with 5qts of new Valvoline 5w-20, then drained again.  Put the plug back in, and refilled with another 6qts of Valvoline 5w-20, and drained again.  I pulled the whole filter the second time, and that's where it sits.

I haven't started the motor yet, as I wanted to get some advice.  My first priority was to flush the crankcase with as much oil as possible as soon as possible.

Where would GRM go from here?  I was thinking about getting a couple 5qt jugs of SuperTech oil at Wal-Mart to do some subsequent fills/drains.  At some point, I was going to start it, let everything circulate, and then shut it down and do another oil change.

The oil that came out in the 2nd and third drain seems clean and doesn't smell of coolant, but that doesn't make me feel much better.

Thanks for your help!

I would have drained the contaminated oil and filled it with new and started it and not looked back.  You’re fine

Yep, I'd also run in. If there's any remaining, most of it will boil off.

Run it around town a bit and check the oil.  If it looks like oil, party on.  If it looks milky, change it again.

I am guessing you are in the clear.

One oil change would have been sufficient. Nothing got circulated and it wasn't that much to begin with. I also wouldn't put coolant in an oil container ever again so situations like this will be avoided.

water gets into your oil all the time through condensation. The little bit that might be left from your mishap is nothing to worry about. It will burn off like all the rest

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.  I do need a better system for waste oil/coolant, I've searched online for containers but haven't found anything that doesn't leak.  I have a good drain pan, but my downfall is the storage system between when I drain it and when it goes to the dump to be recycled.  For years now, I've used a system where new oil goes on the front wall, and waste goes on the side wall.  This one slipped through the cracks.  Maybe I'll just spray some of the old 5qt. jugs with an obnoxious color to make it more obvious next time :-)

I refilled with 5W-20 today, will drive for a week, and then will do a final oil change.  I know it's probably not necessary, but I'll sleep better that way.

Yeah, you need a better waste management system.  For motor oil, I put it in a plastic 40 gallon barrel, then take it out of there and burn it to heat the shop.  Coolant gets put in waste jugs labeled as such and given to the auto parts store or whoever will take it.

In your case, I'd say you are fine now.  Drive it, check for chocolate milk, change it if you have it, otherwise change at your next regularly scheduled interval.

My 22R motor has gone through a couple head gaskets.  Chocolate milk type events.  Hasn't seemed to bothered it.  I did fully rebuild it at 290K when I had the head off for bent valves (timing chain), thinking, hey, 300K, it could use a rebuild.  Well, per the machine shop, the crank needed a light polish and there was .003" taper in the holes.  I should have just thrown a new head on it and kept going.

Depending on how much you go through, my waste oil goes in the 5 gallon buckets...

Waste coolant goes into an old coolant container.

A good habit to get into is to ALWAYS label your containers! If you put used oil into an oil bottle, label it "USED" and put a big "X" on the lid. I learned it in school in chemistry class and it's treated me well through life. Never put mystery fluids in a reused container without labeling it. Even just a sharpie writing on the bottle is enough.

Waste coolant gets dumped. If on sewer, a 20:1 dilution is recommended. Out in the sticks, either in the burn pit or through gravel and shoveled over so nothing tries to get the sweet sweet death drink. Oil gets burned with the garbage.  The 15 years of old oil filters is a different story.
