For house plumbing. To make a long story short I need to install the pipe nipples through the drywall for the sinks, and I really don't want it leaking inside the walls where I can't see it. So what is the go-to pipe thread sealant for when you absolutely want it sealed up good?

Paste.

I like the liquid Teflon sealant. It’s easy and you don’t have to remember which way the threads go like regular tape.

Been doing plumbing part time for years and my old man does it. Anything with NPT gets paste and tape on top, possibly overkill, but it won't leak. I'm sure you know already but the tape is directional. The other big plumbing rules are #1-poop flows downhill, and #2-payday is friday.

I went to a real hardware store and got some expensive pipe dope.  It didn't work.  I am back to tape.

Never had a taped joint leak.

As mentioned, it is directional.  Just do it right.

Rectorseal 5. Red and white can has been the standard for years.

teflon tape is just "supposed" to be a lubricant to allow the NPT fittings to slip together - its not really a sealant.  For lubricating and sealing, I like the soft set stuff.  Its gooey to allow the pipes to tighten and then slowly becomes a little more paste-y.

Expando is the best but a pain.  It has to be mixed before use and swells as it drys its great for when you need to clock a fitting on the other end.

Yes pipe Metal only!  Thanks for pointing that out OLD.  I forget plastic is the thing now...

Don't use expanding paste on plastic pipe. It will expand and crack the female side.

I like using both teflon tape and rectorseal "t plus 2". Teflon first then rectorseal in top of the teflon.
