This is a '87 chevy step van p 30 and the seller says the steering floats above 45. He said he replaced some steering components (king pins) but that didn't resolve the problem.

I am wondering what it could be and how much it would cost.

Any ideas?

On those large chassis, sway at speed is frequently either swaybar bushings or steering stabilizers.

It could also be the steering gear being out of adjustment or worn out.

It may also have a track bar for the front axle. If the bushings on it are worn it will wander as the axle shifts from side to side.

There are quite a few possible causes.  Probably best to let a trusted mechanic put it in the air and look for worn parts.  But everything from tires to alignment to several different worn parts.

This article covers most of the basics:

The sway bushings on my F53 were $12 or so and took an hour to change. The steering stabilizer is probably $40-$50.

Front end parts wont be expensive but the my be a pain to change. Rockauto will carry them.
