Three times now, my dog has got up at night or early morning coughing and gagging trying to vomit.  It's only water and then a hard yellow something between the size of a quarter and a golf ball.  The first tw times I just wiped up the mess, but yesterday this marble looked like one of the river rocks in the garden.  OK, he chews rocks.  The rock felt grainy on the outside, I washed it in hot water and examined it.

I called the Vet but they wanted me to bring him in three weeks from now.  I went to see the folks that run a doggie training and day care center, Winter goes there three days a week.  Rob has five dogs from a Frenchie to a St. Bernard, and lots of experience.  He was stumped.  I pulled out a pocket knife and poked at it, Rob just cut it in half.  (no pics, I threw it out).  The outside is grainy, but the inside was harder and like amber glass.

Google says yellow indicates bile, something hard could be a blockage or allergy or....?

Any experiences with this stuff?

Thanks, Dan

It sure doesn't make me think of anything specific. I'd sure be worried about a foreign body. If it was me, I'd be somewhere where he could get checked out. Now.

have you tried switching dog food? Can you watch him when he's outside to make sure he's not eating something he shouldn't?

OK, done.  Sept. 18th @ 11:15.  Trish thinks it's some chewie things we get, too rough even for a dog's aggressive stomach acid.

Sept 18??? There has to be a vet that can see him sooner than that.

I would call around and find another vet who can take him in earlier. Or see if you can grease the wheels at your vet with a case of beer or something to get seen today.

To that end, call your vet and say "hey, I think Fido needs to be seen sooner - can you recommend an emergency vet?" and then cancel your appointment.

My concern is that this dog has a history of chewing rocks, three days of vomiting, vomited up something that definitely wasn't food.

If it's a foreign body, time can be your enemy. It varies a lot depending on if it makes it into the intestine.

I had a patient that went five years with a foreign body in the stomach, but in the intestines three days can be a really long time.

Sure, there's lots of other things that could be too. I've just seen too many dogs die from foreign bodies. I would want to know.
