Anyone else notice that Jeep and others are making allow wheels that look like they are missing hubcaps? Why spend the money on alloys that look like cheap steelies?

Don't forget the Cross Trek:
I also see these as an extension of the trend:
and
Didn't like them at first, like them now, no reason.
FWIW either the OP or the above, none of those invoke the thought of stamped steel wheels to me either
I think all of your examples look like alloys. I thought you were going to cite some of the rusty sleeper hot rods that have custom alloys that support performance tires while looking like steel wheels that have long since lost their hubcaps to Detroit potholes.
Because it's got the rugged look that they want for marketing. Also, truck wheels seem to be in a race to the bottom for unattractive design.
Alloys that look like steel wheels are nothing new.
It's probably worth noting that, of the four pictures in the original post, three of them are from the same manufacturer and two are probably the same wheel
Mercedes and Acura used to make alloys that looked like cheap hubcaps so I guess its just a continuation of that trend.
They are better than the foam wheels that were supposed to look like alloys. Few things are more embarrassing than having a dog bite a chunk out of your wheel.

hey, now... i had those on a 77 Monte Carlo i had about 20 years ago and my mom had some on an 86 Mustang she had in the early 90's..
I've never understood why most OEM wheels are so ugly. Why can't you just give me a classic, basic 5-, 6-, or 7-pointed design?

I love these. So retro, in a good way.

Me too. They're a good throwback to the original design.

I'm convinced Toyota can't build a hubcap that stays on. It took me a while to realize that those wheels had hubcaps. They look good without, which is how I see them most of the time anyway.

It ain't just trucks, though the aftermarket truck wheels are pretty awful. Just about all OE wheels are hideous these days.

last winter i bought a set of slightly used 14" snow tires that came on a set of Toyota wheels that had hubcaps on them that looked like they were mostly held on by the lug nuts... nope... i had to fight just to get the stupid caps off just to get the wheels onto my manual tire changer..
