What's your Automotive Taste Outlier? What do I mean? I mean most of us here like small sports cars and the people around probably know that. So what car/vehicle would be your dirty little secret that you wouldn't necessarily post on facebook but would still be excited about when you picked it up.

Maybe you're a Harley guy, but that scooter looks like a Hoot! Or maybe your Jeep offroader buddies would disown you if you showed up in a Jeep Compass with gasp front wheel drive, but it just makes so much sense to you.

Mine, you ask? Well... a Kia ...Soul. Don't tell anyone, I don't want to lose my Man Card or even my GRM Card. I've never even sat in one, let alone driven in one.

They just look funky and neat to me:

Maybe this is a form of confession: "I consider myself a gear head, but I like the Kia Soul."

Somewhere in the late 80's I owned a 2 door 1983 Nissan Sentra that was the epitome of everything I despise. It was FWD. It had a tiny little gutless motor. It had a vague rubbery shifter. It felt like it was made of tin cans and paper. It had vinyl seats with no perforations so it stuck to your ass and legs. It wasn't ugly so much as completely void of any sort of attempt at style.

I would have another one in a heartbeat. It was actually fun to drive, wholly un-killable, miserly with fuel and somehow able to barrel down dirt roads and plow thru slush at wide-open throttle without killing me. I traded it in on a hardbody truck. They gave me $400.

All of my automotive tastes are outliers.

This.

I've always really dug the Honda Element despite it being completely opposite of what I'm normally into

Seriously I own and drive 80s Chryslers exclusively. I am an outlier.

But if I have to pick something it would be late 90s early 00s minitrucks.

I guess for me.... my outliers would be the FJ Cruiser and the new Turbo Diesel Grand Cherokee?

Which, would be normal for most people?

I want to own a landspeed car for some reason. I really don't know why.

1970s American land barges. They are heavy, slow, handle like garbage and get horrible MPG. They are full of restrictive, unproven, unreliable emissions systems. They were built when the quality of American cars was nearing it's low point.

I don't care. I love them, and I'd love to own another.

ERM, let's see. My conquest includes a turbo Camry wagon, a v10 excursion, a turbo Mopar van, a 5 door gd, among other things. I guess... A 64 on juice? Oh and a 71 Newport. And a 74 town car. And a hearse. And a Dooley. And a 59 impala... What was the question again?

Also this.

My current want/ acquire list for the next few years includes a Jaguar (X300 XJ6 or manual X-type), an Alfa of some sort, RX7, Saab 900 or 9-3 and a Mustang. Also I am probably going to start putting a little money away to buy an '80s TVR wedge at some point.

Electric cars. I'm the type that loves everything about the sounds and smells and raw energy that make race cars and high-performance street cars so badass. But for my daily commute I'm beginning to gravitate toward rolling appliances who do their job silently, efficiently, comfortably and with no fuss.

My wife hates minivans and has a long history with Euro imports, but she has suddenly become obsessed with getting a new Kia Sedona all the cool luxury features.

I have a few.

I want a Gremlin in this guise

And also a Vega

And, come on now, if it was good enough for Bob Glidden, it is good enough for me.

But, the oddest part is that none of those cars do anything for me unless they look like that. They're just ugly cars unless they have skinny front tires, giant slicks and do excellent wheelies.

I like the '90s-'00s Import Tuner scene. I fondly remember going to NOPI shows.

I hope to one day make a "clone" of that green Eclipse.

In reply to tuna55:

Pretty much any ugly car with skinny front tires and giant slicks that is capable of doing excellent wheelies gets a pass. pun intended

As for new cars, I kindof also like the Element, and I find a strange attaction to the Ford Flex. My other tastes run the gamut from old Volvos to 60's and 70's MOPARS to pretty much anything pre-1962. I'd love a Brass Era car and a Cordoba.

Please do it to a real eclipse. That one wasn't even an eclipse. It was a swapped talon. There's more eclipses on the road than made due to stupid swaps. The talons are cooler. And make it actually fast. The movie car was an na/420a so realistically, it'd be easier to srt4 swap it like a cloud car then try and make a real DSM out of it.
