How do ya like them apples: Connecticut: Cars can be booted on private property.
I know there will be those who say "well pay your taxes and you won't have to worry", but there's a whole lot more to this than that.

This is what happens when we privatize the government. Ya think ViaAlert is not motivated to put boots on everything in the world? Profit Profit Profit. e39 M3 turbcharge your berkley rights.
Double edge sword on this one. It's only happening in some towns, not state wide. And the ones who owe taxes have received a warning.
1. I'd love to have this happen to a certain person who lives nearby.
OTOH, I don't like the hired "collectors" going on private property and basically killing someone's ability to get the funds to pay the taxes. With the unemployment rate continuing to escalate in this state, this is wrong. What happens when they accidentally boot an MDs car, and because he couldn't get to work/hospital someone's health is jeapodized? Or some other scenerio the town's lawyer has not thought of. Then the residents of the town will be paying that attorney, and the ones hired, far more than the taxes collected.
And what happens when one of the hired collectors is attacked while booting a car by a pissed off owner thinking theft is occuring?
If this ever happens to me, and the town had made a mistake--as has happened, and pointed out in the article--I'd rent a gas-powered cutting wheel, cut the damn thing off and sue the town, and go after the company for criminal tresspassing. And that individual who booted the car.
Booted on a public road is different. You are using the road that your taxes maintain. No taxes, no local road maintenance---driving is a privelage not a right, so paying the property tax supports the ability to drive on the road. I have no problem with that.
This is one of those things where it will wind up in court, and hopefully not after someone has gotten their brains bashed in.
The $175 "fee" to have the boot removed, after having paid the back tax, is way, way too high. This should happen to someone who works in Ct media, better yet, the Attorney General's office. Then let's see what happens to the legality of booting on private property.
there was a guy in NoVa that just a few years ago won a six year long fight against tickets for an expired registration issued on private property - even then the judge explicitly stated that he didn't want to take his side edit this bit, but i do remember at least one judge being a dick.

i dont understand why a car on private property isnt the same as any other possession that is legal to own (as in outside people shouldnt be messing with it), but oh well.

Where's the guy with the car (Neon?) who moved his booted car into his garage then dared the boot installation guys to come get their boot?
Future reference for any private company that boots me on my property - (1) boot's coming off, (2) I'm keeping the boot, (3) berkeley you.
Wonder what sort of lawn art I could make out of a couple of plasma-torched off wheel boots? Maybe build a wheel boot guy scare crow?
And if someone comes onto my property and leaves something behind on my yard, can I get them fined for littering?

No kidding.

I'm sure this will be tested in court when a boot minion is mistaken for a criminal and ventilated by an armed citizen protecting his private property. Repo work is dangerous... this will be the same.
I like to think I'd have the sense of humor to handcuff him to the boot until someone came along and rescued him.
Y'all just need to move to Texas So what if the winters are warmish and the summers are hottish...we have the best lookin chicks ,(women) Food,(mexican) roads,(everywhere) jobs, sports teams...i could go on and on about no state taxes and all of that, but if something is stressful make yourself aware of it and avoid it in the future...
I don't care what the side of the van says, if there's somebody stupid enough to be monkeying around with one of my cars on my private property, they WILL be met with a face full of shotgun. I've read way too many stories in the paper about people posing to be a legitimate worker to gain access to private property in order to rob/rape/kill you.
OTOH, it would be kind of hilarious to pull a driveshaft or something on one of these turds while they were booting somebody.

We don't need people from statez who allow such stuff, it's liable to spread down hear.
This reminds me of an issue going round here. We live in a gated community so access is limited which means this problem pretty well has to be coming from within. We've been having an issue with someone (probably kids in the neighborhood) banging on doors or windows at 2-3 a.m. We have a forum and people complained and told everyone (& hopefully the parents) how dangerous this was because there were all kinds of stories about home invasions that began by knocking on doors so they needed to quit it as they were likely to get hurt.
We have one liberal from up north in the neighborhood who said we were all criminals and Nazis for even suggesting that guns were ever the solution to any problem and one day someone would be shot and the forum would be used in a court of law. All we had to do was find out who was doing it and talk to Little Johnny's parents and the problem would be solved. Problem is no one could catch little Johnny in the act to identify him.
The kids made 3-4 rounds of doing this and then at one house the door opened just after they banged on it and were in full flight. A couple of rounds of shotgun fire - not at them - up in the air brought it home to the perps. We haven't had a problem again. Now either the parents read the posts on what happened or maybe the kids had the crap scared out of them, but it stopped.
After the fact we heard that our liberal (or is it conservative?) had his door beaten on in the middle of the night and his wife was so scared someone was going to come back and get her that she couldn't sleep for a few nights afterward. But in any case after about the 2nd round of door bangings he quit posting nasty comments to all.
At an HOA meeting several people wore Tshirts with a picture of a Colt 45 on the front with the saying "We don't call 911"
Nope, sure, wouldn't. Besides I don't think they make boots big enough for most of tires around here....

This. I find some jackleg hanging immobilizing hardware on my car on my property, back taxes or no back taxes there will be a Real Nasty Problem.
