I will be grabbing this. It is a Taurus model 82 4"barrel .38 special. It was a police or military issued revolver. I am looking forward to shooting it after work. They are very affordable right now, just under $180 including shipping and transfer fees.

Nice patina as well.

not for nothin, and that is a nice looking gun, but i don't think taurus was ever issued to military or police. from what i understand, taurus mostly makes knock-offs or look alikes of popular major-brand guns. just guessing but thats probably a look-alike/similar design to the Smith & wesson .38s that were police issue back in the day.

Edit: here's the story behind it http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-635671.html

Police issue in Brazil, these were just imported recently. It is very similar to a S&W K frame.

I have the S&W version, but it appears my barrel is slightly longer. Still have the holster. Police issue in Memphis back in the 60's.

have the S&W version also... don't get to shoot it as often as I'd like... but I like it... doesn't have near the patina on it so it's prior owners (my father-in-law and his uncle before him) apparently didn't shoot it much haha...

I dig worn blue handguns. I'm a sucker for battle scars.

What's the story with the ring on the butt of the stock?

Probably tethered to a uniform. I carry a J frame S&W 4 inch barrel .38 +P at work and might I say, they are damn accurate. I wouldn't mind an auto, but .38s can be rather fun especially when you learn to load multiple rounds at once without a speed loader. Have fun.

The ring on the butt is for a lanyard, to tie to you so the bad guys don't steal your gun. I understand they are back in fashion int he sand box, after decades of being out of fashion.

Taurus are not "knock offs." They bought the factory from Beretta with the rights to continue to make the same models. They licensed the S&W designs, I think. Quality from Taurus was (is) better than S&W or Beretta. And they have a life time no-bs warranty. Got a problem? Fed Ex it to them, they fix it, they send it back. Don't even need a FFL to do it.

The Taurus 92's are a serious bargain these days. The mag is different (hole in a slightly different place or configuration), but otherwise they are identical to the Baretta 92's. Sell used for around three bills.

It shoots well. The windage is spot on, the elevation is off. To lower the point of impact I need to add some metal to the front sight. Suggestions on how to do this will be appreciated.

I keep seeing this thread title, and I keep not knowing anything about guns. But every freaking time, Mission of Burma's "That's When I Reach For My Revolver" gets stuck in my head...
