When work sucks everyday...

Any job will beat cleaning out a hog barn that had been out of use for 5 or 6 years (I did that in HS). That is what I tell myself whenever I get in a job I don't love.

I like my job. I like my Boss. I get to sleep with my secretary. I'm self employed.

The best thing that ever happened to me was being laid off from my 19 years+ job. Epitome of golden handcuffs - a high wages, benefits job in a rather depressed area. I actually enjoyed the work - graphic design and layout and go to person for the auto section at the local newspaper. But it was the most toxic environment I've ever experienced. A lot of angry, unfulfilled, mean-spirited bigots who were constantly on the lookout for someone else's misfortune so they had something to talk about. Shudder. But thanks to the contacts I made while I was there, I haven't looked back. Freelancing is bloody hard, sometimes I wonder how the mortgage is going to be paid, or if I'll eat next month... but somehow it always works out.

we are going through this at work now. Two years ago our department was downsized from 18 people to 8 and 4 full time casuals.

now they do not want more than 2 people per shift

BUT.. we are upgrading our internal music and comm system.. and our director pulled june 15th out of his ass for the completion date.. on a project we do not even have the specs on, know what we need to buy, or even know how to put together.. and it will require at least 2 people working 8 hours a day for the next three months to install..

but you can't have more than 2 people on per shift.. and we still need to set up meetings, take down meetings, do PR work, and answer the pager for things that aren't working.

There is so much truth in this thread that it should be engraved on Golden Plates, and used to start a new religion.

I just got laid off. But..after watching first-hand as my once small, innovative (and privately owned) company became part of a large, plodding behemoth, I'm actually kinda stoked about the opportunity to start over. It's a weird situation in the trenches right now..those of us who are leaving are happy (although a bit nervous), and the folks who are staying are asking management why they didn't ask for volunteers. Strange days, indeed..

My employees all seem to leave at 5. Most of them make almost as much money as I do. The rent on my shop went up about 20% last year.

I'm thinkin about an auction sale and a 9-5 job and let some other poor putz look after all the other E36 M3.

I have gotten to the point where I come in, do my time and go home. The money makes me look past the guilt since right now seems like a bad time to look for a job. It was odd at first because I have always worked like I would work for myself, but this place slowly kills any part of you that wants to do more. We promote unqualified people who don't understand how their job or mine should be done simply because their parents are in management so they have the "Golden Ticket" up the ladder.

I stopped caring about a lot of unimportant bull E36 M3 that a gov't job makes seem important. I do the important parts of my job well, enough so that my supervisors more or less let me be, but I just can't get into the part of the job where I have to talk to a long time employee about wearing the wrong socks or discourage them from using the bathroom because I have a schedule to maintain. Seeing how the place works has made me decide I want to continue workng outside away from upper management and I have no desire to get promoted beyond where I'm at anymore.

Since I'm on a government computer, I won't say anything bad about my job It has it's ups and downs, the biggest thing for myself (personally) is who I am working WITH. Makes all the difference in the world! I get paid on the low side, but the perks are quite ridiculous (like planning our travelling work schedule around our own personal schedule, being able to take holidays whenever we want if we have them banked, etc). The benefits package isn't insane, but it is good. And I work 8:30 till 4:30 mon-fri, have weekends off, and in general get to live my life. Somebody would have to pay me a lot more with fairly similiar perks to get me away from this!

While my actual employer is basically the feds, there are enough layers of "filter" between me and them that I don't usually have to deal with 95% of the bullE36 M3, and boy is that valuable. I wouldn't trade those guys for any sane increase in salary. I guess if we start talking triple or quadruple my current salary, then maybe it'd be worth putting up with the gov't crap. But anything less than that, I'd rather not have the money and keep the buffers in place.

Maybe it's time to sell them part of the business?

I am the science teacher/upper-elementary assistant at a private school. I'm really torn about my job. I alternate pretty frequently between loving and hating it.

Worst part is being the only full-time male employee. I'm pretty sure the only one they've had for about ten years. I could go into details, but I think most of you can imagine most of it.

Oh, and I'm paid hourly and get no PTO. Christmas and Easter break suck.

OTOH, I get paid to play games with the kids from 3-5pm while doing daycare duty. That's pretty nice.

I've thought about it but I always screw up the part of the interview where they ask what managment positions my father and grandfather hold/held.

I'm just annoyed at the attitude that my company, and I'm sure many other companies take, right now.

"Things are rough, so good luck finding another job, better be grateful that you have this one. Also, we're gonna basically do whatever we want with you, because we have a boatload of new apps here."

It never fails to amaze me, if you paid your employees just a couple bucks more an hour, you'd have a lot of decent and dedicated people, but we're all about saving a quick buck and hiring whoever will pass the background check.

Of course, after the last couple years, I am thankful that I have a full-time gig with benefits...but the way I look at it now is after my work is done, I get paid to look for another job.

Makes the shift more bearable.
