Well, where? And by state, I of course also mean province for you types north of the border, and territory/township/village whatever the heck British people have.

PA- driver's side, bottom of windshield. One sticker, roughly 3" by 1.5", for safety inspection and (unless you live in the sticks) one sticker for emissions.

I live in PA and they put it on the driver's side, bottom of windshield. One sticker, roughly 3" by 1.5", for safety inspection and (unless you live in the sticks) one sticker for emissions.

Oh wait, you said that.

NC - we just changed to a no sticker plan. You won't get your registration updated unless you have a current inspection though, so maybe I should have said the upper right corner of the license plate?

Hey, wait a minute: We started OBD-II emissions testing in PA a few years ago statewide (a couple areas had had tailpipe testing for a while longer) because it was going to go nationwide. WTF happened to that?

NY - 2" square inspection sticker and 2x4" registration sticker both bottom drivers side windshield. Given some of the frightening poc cars I see around the inspection is merely another car tax, but at least we don't get the annual raping VA residents get on the personal property tax.

NJ - one sticker, lower left, for both safety and emissions. Good for 4 years on a new car, every 2 after that... Kinda nice compared to the yearly inspections I have to deal with in PA... although since my two main drivers are diesels, I don't have to worry about the emissions sticker.

In Virginia, it's at the base of the windshield, centered. It used to be, there was a property tax sticker beside it, but if you still have one of those on your car, they can ticket you for having an impaired field of vision.

There was a bill in the legislature that would tie the inspection to the registration, with a tougher inspection process for those that wanted a 2 year registration. The main opponents that saw the bill shot down? Sherrif's association. Easiest ticket they can write, and many just pay it as opposed to taking a day of work to show that they got it fixed. Sadly, a short visit to the clerk's office ahead of time with proof of current inspection will usually see the ticket thrown out.

Although Lake county up by Chicago does have emissions testing.

Having lived in both states I have to agree with this too.

SC used to do inspections, now nothing. Pollute all you want and if your car kills someone we don't care because most locals drive great big honking SUVs. The inspections were a joke when they did happen. $5.00 would get you a sticker at just about any gas station and the guy behind the counter wouldn't even get out of his chair. He would loan you a scraper to get the old one off with. They would also charge you double if you put the first on one up side down.

IA no sticker/GA no sticker. IA used to have inspections, my dad did them when he was in high school. My dad doesn't know E36 M3 about cars.

They need to bring them back. After working in shops and seeing cars come in with barely adequate suspension & brake maintenance, and seeing them leave again when the owner was too cheap/broke and just didn't care...makes driving, x-that, being anywhere near a public road kinda scary.

Emissions goes on the front plate, safety inspection goes on the rear. There's also a round badge that goes in the lower-right corner of the windscreen that states what emissions class the car is, and if it's too low you're not allowed to drive it downtown in some cities. Yeah, that's real useful.

MD has no safety inspection and no sticker. MD has no tax sticker. MD has no emissions sticker. MD has a registration sticker, two actually, month and year. They go on the rear license plate.
