What should really wake him up is the amount he will pay by the end of the loan. I just plugged some numbers into an online calculator, and $800 per month will require about 21 years, and $97,000 in interest alone to pay off the loan. Increasing the monthly payment to $1000 decreases the term to 14 years and the interest to $60k.
