I berkeleying hate Vista, I was moving some vids from one folder to the other and they dissappeared? No warning box or anything, searches with no results WTF. And it wouldn't be such a big deal if it weren't all my Top Gear Episodes lol. Any ideas?

Did you copy and then paste or click and drag? Maybe a system restore if they are not in the recycler?

Check the trash.

Try a search on file size, there are not going to be a lot of 200 meg plus files on your HD so they should be pretty easy to find.

I wonder if they are hiding on the desktop somewhere (happens a lot when you use two monitors and turn one off). Of course it could be a new DRM "feature" in Vista.

My mom had a similar problem (on a Mac BTW). She would have a bunch of windows open, drag a file, accidentally release the mouse button mid-drag, file could be in any number of places.

nope they are just GONE well that teaches me to be more careful with the mouse and back up important stuff, (just finished backing up all the vids of the kids)

Make sure you're searching the entire drive and that you enable searching for hidden folders, Vista likes to try and be smarter than you and to search just in your user directories.

This might help:

A good rule of thumb is to copy and paste vs. the click and drag. Good plan to back up the kid vids, just in case. Might even consider burning those to a DVD.

Whoa that's really bad...System restore won't help...try doing a proper search - the Vista search tool will need extensive tweaking to do a proper search like the Windows 98 search tool did.

If you can't find the file, try a recovery tool on the directory where the files originally were, and where you put them.

Also buying a Mac will only make different things suck hard, keep your PC and switch to XP or Ubuntu, or at least Vista SP1. The original Vista was just a beta release with paying testers.

BTW, avoid writing to either of the drives involved until you've tried the recovery tool.

Well, it was just folder to folder on the same drive both folders are gone btw, I hate vista, I wish it was an option to downgrade to xp

If both file folders were deleted and you weren't prompted to give the OK for that, you may need to change a setting for the recycler. Right click on the recycle bin and choose properties. Make sure the "Display Delete Confirmation Dialogue" box is checked and the "Do not move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" radio button is NOT avtive.

I know that doesn't exactly help your current conundrum, but maybe it will help down the road. And, while I don't think Vista is all that bad, you still have the option to install XP. XP

50G should not be hard to find lol

I'm sure you already tried this, but click on the start button, at the bottom where it says "Start Search" type in a file name you remember, or even just the first few letters of the file. Click "Search Everywhere" when that pops up. Then, click "Advanced Search" and select "Computer" under the location drop-down menu. Also check the "Show hidden files". If it's there, that should do it. I did a search that way and it was even finding font files with my search querry in the name.

I hope you ae able to find them.

You'll need to log in to post.
