I have a 3 prong welder. The two prongs are straight up and down. One is large. One is small. I need at least 10 ft to get my welder off the wall to work on a truck bed. I
Should I buy a prefab or butcher some really expensive cord to do it?
Thank you all. Such a great wealth of information on here.

Your best bet is to get the appropriate male and female connectors and some 10/3 SJO cable and make up your own extension. It's not at all rocket science.
I have to find the connectors as well. I've been to 3 hardware stores with no luck thus far.
I found a pretty good cord at HF (?!) and cut the ends of and put my own connectors on it.
From my Pocket Ref, you connector looks to be a 250v 50 amp connector (#5-50) 2 pole, 3 wire grounding. I am not sure what the parenthesis numbers are, but I think they are the required wire size.
I suspect someone with a bit more wiring / electrician knowledge around here can give you some more specific requirements / specs.
Princess Auto, which is the Harbour Freight of Canada, has them..
I made my own. Got everything at Lowes.

That's what we've done at work. We also make maybe 1 foot adaptor cables to mate one species of male plug to the other species of wall outlet.
That IS another option, too - you can change your wall outlet, or the cable on the welder.

Home Depot or Lowe's should have what you need. I made my own extension cord from the shelves of Home Depot.

Just make sure to be VERY aware of the amperage and wiring requirements.
I am not electrician. I am hoping someone here can give you a synopsis of what are some of the basics you need to be sure of.
I guess I need to drive into town one day after work. The nearest lowes is 30 miles.
As far away from the breaker my plug in is I could probably run 6 or 8 gauge as long as I want. Probably 15 ft.
Menards has an actual honest to god 20' welder extension cable. I think I payed $60 for it.
Menards 50amp 8-3 welder cord 69.99
It's made out of stranded 8 gauge. It looks just like a giant black extension cord. The ends are barely biger than the Welder ends and have Lights that light up when I plug it in. It's nice becasue it has a durable cord that I can step on, get oil/greese on, not have to worry about dirt getting embeded like I would if it was homemade out of romex. Also the ends are well integrated to the cable so I don't have to worry about it comming apart. It was going to cost ~$50 to get all the stuff to make one so I just sprung for the pre-made and couldn't be happier.

Amazon's got this too..
Ok well. Being that I don't plan on driving into the city for anything, I went ahead and ordered the Menards one. I've never seen or been to a 'Menards' before but ill have to keep it in mind.
The amazon ones looked fine too. I appreciate all the help.
I broke my skill saw blade the other day... It was a bear to find an 80'' 1/8th locally I finally did but have not finished my project. I'm building some car dolly rollers out of 4xs and heavy duty casters with shag carpet on top for a no slip surface so that I can roll my project cars around the garage side to side and also putting my welding/picnic table which currently has a 500lb truck bed on it on casters to make my welding/torch/sandblasting station more convenient.
I used a heavy duty 220v RV power cable and a dryer cord (as thats what I plug into)... that thing is heavy... came out cheaper than buying the cable from lowes/home depot and the plug ends
