Going to be in Memphis for a business trip September 23-25. Will have a few hours to kill, although nothing crazy. I want to get good BBQ--not looking for touristy restaurants unless they also happen to have the best food. I'll be staying on the east side of town, right at 240 and highway 57/72. I will have a car.
Things that I'm already planning on doing: Sun Studio.
Central BBQ is really good BBQ. According to the people I know who live there, better then Rendezvous.
Swanky's Tacos are great too.
Sun Studio was a good tour. I heard Graceland was too touristy and didn't go, and regret it.
I've only been there once and ate at Rendezvous, known for very good dry rub ribs. Locals might know if it overrated though.

In reply to fritzsch:
we ate there last time I was in Memphis and we loved it. I was coming on to post to go there.
And a slow night at BB King's Blues Club is better than almost any other night at any other blues club in the world.
Take a few roses and give them to the humongous black lady who can sing like an angel. She'll love you for it.

That's where the wife and I went when we drove to Nashville a few years ago.
Cool location. Average food.
Church kinda guy? Bellevue Baptist is an incredible mega church you gotta see. They have a Wednesday night mid-week service.
I had some great food at that minor league baseball park once.
That's all I got.

Catholic church kinda guy. And by that, I mean I hunt out the shortest mass possible. So no thanks to the mega-church.
From what I hear, the Rendezvous has kind of gone down hill since Charlie died.
King's Cafe and Rum Boogie had good food the last couple times I've been down there.

Ha ha - I was raised Catholic and rumor was that there was a priest in The Wisconsin Dells that can do the early Sunday mass in 20 minutes leaving more time for fishing and water skiing.
