So as I eagerly await the arrival of my new soft top, and reading my wonderful new Miata literature (can I get a discount on future purchase Keith? ). I've been constantly rereading the section on replacing the soft top. I want to be prepared. However I see a slight problem. It says I need a pop rivet gun to re-secure the top in some places. I'm already using this as an excuse to get a drill. Can I rent a pop rivet gun? And if so from where?

Well, I'm not sure why you want to rent one when they're cheap (under US$ 50) to buy, but try a construction tool rental shop. They usually have industrial versions of power tools and such; maybe they'll have a riveter.

Being a half-dork on a swap happy forum, it SHOULD be a tool already in your box anyway! You'll find uses for it, I'm sure.

hand ones like $15 but a air ones the way to go for large diameter units. I've got this one. http://cgi.ebay.com/AIR-RIVET-GUN-pop-riveter-riveting-Tool-NEW-w-CASE-NR-/360287486969?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0

but mine didn't come with the case...

Best investment i made before outfitting my race car with Dzus fastend body panels...over 60 dzus tabs with 2 rivets per tab.

Just buy a basic one. Mine came from Ace Hardware and does the job.

I didn't even notice I made HalfDork. Go me!

And currently, I uh, don't have any tool box. Well except for two small universal kit (you know,a little bit of everything). We're working on cleaning out the garage, and then...

Thinking about it, my current one came from Ace too. I had worn out one of the original POP brand riveters, and needed a new one. Ace, for about US$ 15.00, and it followed me home that trip to the store. Works just fine, and I've used it for several years, probably 200 rivets or so. All 1/8, but even so...

I'd've done HF, but the closest store is 125 miles that-a-way, and the need came when the next trip was about 2 wks away. So Ace in my hometown got the business instead of getting the business

HF is mail order.

You can't rent a pop rivet gun. Don't bother driving to the construction tool rental store- they won't have it, and you'll spend more on fuel going there then you would buying a new one from Home Depot.

Besides...they might giggle behind your back.

Buy one.

Pick one up someplace. They're right next to the rivet guns.
