Kids are going on a cruise and want a go pro for their scuba diving, and I wouldn't mind having one for inside the car. Which one? Go big or go cheap? Wife says there is a new one called black for $450ish and another one on sale for $200. Both get good reviews, but she was a little overwhelmed by all the choices and prices. Reviews for the cheap one say it doesn't work well in low light conditions. Seems they keep coming out with new ones.
Can't speak to the actual 'true' GoPros, but my SJCAM SJ400 has worked great for everything I've thrown at it. It comes with a waterproof enclosure as well as a number of mounts. It doesn't come with all you might want (no body or head mount for example), but will use the GoPro mounts you can get cheaply on Amazon or elsewhere.
It's also $75 from Amazon- you still need a MicroSD card, but those are cheap too so you can have it running and usable for under $100 (important note I didn't know at first: 32GB is the biggest card it will use, 64GB is right out...). We used it to film SWMBO's dance company's performance from up on the overhead rigging and it handled the low-light portions almost better than the 'real' cameras the videographer was using. It's not perfect, but mine has served me quite well.
I use a Replay XD Prime, (waterproof to 10ft without case-- deeper with) and I've found the image quality to be far superior to the GoPro's. I've also heard good things about Garmin's camera, so I'd keep an open mind.
GoPro is sort of like Kleenex, or Coke---- everyone know the name, but it may not be the best choice. Here's a quick video shot with the Replay. I"m pretty sure the language is NSFW. The camera got thrown from the minibike at about 35mph and was unharmed. I thought that was fairly impressive. I'm pretty sure I didn't have the camera set on the highest resolution either-- but the image quality is still good.

You said kids. Buy cheap. It will hurt less when they lose it.
The Garmin cameras are sweet but, yes, you can find GoPro accessories everywhere. They are the standard, good or bad.
Let's see if this video embeds. I shot it this weekend with a GoPro Hero 3+. Light was kind of low.
From our local skatepark. Fun stuff. No, not quite ready for the X Games, I admit. Tags: @GoPro, @SandME36 M3ter. pic.twitter.com/0c5COMlh3P— David S. Wallens (@DavidSWallens) July 31, 2016
Okay, it didn't quite embed. If you click the link, you can see the tweet with the video.
