I tried searching but could not figure it out on my phone. I have been looking and looking and can't seem to figure out which tablet is the best for me. I currently have a Viewsonic Gtab but I need something a little bit smaller and more up to date. My son is autistic and I need something I can watch movies on for car rides to help keep him entertained. A list of my must-haves:
7" (8-9.5" would be perfect, I think) I would really, really like to be able to get a waterproof case - again, autistic son. this would give me some more peace of mind with letting him play with it <$200 compatible with Google play and Amazon app stores
There is currently a Sony Xperia S on woot with cradle for $260. While it is over my $200 cap I really really want an Xperia and since I have Verizon I can't have one as a phone, it has expandable storage and it's gorgeous. Should I choose this over say a refurb Nook HD or Kindle Fire??
New Google Nexus 7" is $229

I can see my phone reformatted my post - I copied and pasted from androidforums.com.
My must-haves:
smaller than 10 (10 is just a tad too big)
expandable storage - doesn't matter what kind of card
dev support in case I would like to upgrade or the stock programming is subpar
larger than 7 (8-9.5; would be perfect, I think)
I would really, really like to be able to get a waterproof case - again, autistic son. this would give me some more peace of mind with letting him play with it
less than $200
compatible with Google play and Amazon app stores
Formatting is killing me tonight. Maybe the gods of internet shopping karma are telling me something.
I have a nexus7 and really like it. My son just bought a 7 inch ASUS tablet off amazon for $99 and it does everything as well as my Nexus. It also has a micro SD slot as well. I'd be shocked it Nexus7 covers didn't fit as it's exactly the same size though the port locations might be off.
I can look up exactly which one it is if you'd like.
If you do not mind.
I'm currently looking for something in 8-9.5" range.
I have bought used smart phones from both these retailers with good results. They both sell tablets (but I have not bought those.)

For Karma, keep your choices to at least the grade of "Great".
For the Cow, keep choices to at least grade 5 but grade 6 would be better.

I picked up a couple of the Asus tablets at Kmart a couple of months ago for $99. The work as well or better then the Samsung Galaxy Tabs I bought the older kids last summer. Then you could dedicate one to the son and not have to worry about yours.
Thank you Toyman, that's a very good idea.
I ended up getting him a dedicated 7" tablet from toys r us. Kurio. It comes with a rubbery/nylon sleeve and was $99. Android OS 4.0.
Supposedly there's some decent apps targeting autism and such so we're going to try them out, see if we can get him to communicate a little more regularly.

Hang on, not a canoe (I swear) but my mom bought a no name tablet off some website for 60 bucks that worked pretty well until someones cat knocked it on the floor and broke the screen.

I remembered the site just now. Grabbed a 90 dollar bluetooth headset off of there for 10 bucks too.
Is it just me or is this a crazy good deal?

For those that have one, how integrated are google services? I know on the chromebooks it pretty much uses the google cloud services for everything.

They just came out with a newer Nexus 7, that appears to be the old one. A quality tablet in it's own right, though. It's a good deal with the $20 but not a crazy good deal.
