I'm surprised Joe Bonomassa hasn't shown up on anyone's list yet!

With David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler making up my top three in no particular order.

Bonomassa kinda pissed off a lot of guitar players with his if-you-use-pedals-you-are-lazy thing. Especially funny since he has signature pedals.

I can't say I've ever heard him play something and thought " wow, that was great"

I'm the first one to mention Iommi?!? How did we get to 3 pages and not have him?

Iommi

Hendrix

The Edge

Are my top 3. Edge isnt super technically gifted but I like how he builds soundscapes a lot

My 17 year old was listening to some dark gangsta music and I said "the problem with new music is there are no guitar solos any more" to which he said " there's a good reason for that Dad"

Trying to come up with some which haven't already been covered...

Ewan Dobson. I always try to describe him as what someone who's writing new Bach guitar pieces for Nintendo. Though he just keeps evolving. His most recent album, Little Angels, has some wonderful pieces on it that are decidedly less Nintendo, but he always tickles that sort geometric part of my brain that just digs patterns. The linked piece, Time, is earlier stuff, but a good intro.

And no, I guess he's not really "guitar hero" in the rock 'n roll sense, and fair enough if that's the distinction...

My top 3 as of late ...

Mark Letteri (Snarky Puppy and various solo and colaborative projects)

Cory Wong (Vulfpeck and various solo and colaborative projects)

Derick Trucks (Tedeschi Trucks Band)

All time favorites, well, thats a long list!

Really? Huh, she's playing here Saturday. Might have to make a night of it.

Mark Knopfler plays one or two   notes and you know it's him. Gilmore. Same thing. And Bonnie Raitt. Prolly the best slide guitarist there is, and totally recognizable.

Then for sheer shredliness, John Sykes.

Greg "The Gristle Man" and I went to the same high school, though he was a couple years older.  He is extremely talented.

Guthrie Trapp and local Hamilton favourite Don Oakie. I've come to like guitar players that work within the music making a song better/more complete. I have far less patience for extended guitar wanking.

Oh and I almost forgot Sue Foley. Great player; one of the few blues players I can listen to for more than 30 minutes.
