Don't you just hate it when that happens?
I was on a tanker once that almost took out the Golden Gate Bridge.
I used to live where I crossed over the C&D Canal a lot, which is narrow but carries a lot of large shipping traffic between the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays. One day I was driving across the bridge watching half a dozen guys way up in the rigging of a big ship, busting ass to get some kind of radio aerial dismounted before the bottom side of the bridge did it for them.
I was also living in St. Louis when a big raft of petroleum barges hit the stone pier of the Eads Bridge and broke up. The bridge took it like a champ, but it sure was interesting that night watching 6 or 8 burning tanker barges drifting downstream while every river tug in the vicinity tried like hell to corral them and put them out.

Good news? The replacement was in the pre-construction stage, so the wait won't be that long. We hope.

Oh boy... this isn't ANOTHER bridge that goes between KY and IN that's berkeleyed up now, is it?
Remember: Red, Right, Returning.
The article says that MOST of the navigation lights were working???
Really seems strange that the boat would not be directed under the higher spans.
Even stranger is the ship has made that trip quite a few times with no problems. Wonder who screwed up?
An old friend of mine was a navigator on a destroyer which ran aground down in Florida. He had been off his shift for about two hours and was in his bunk when it happened.

That's the nautical equivalent of layin' down yer hog to slide under a semi and popping up on the other side with nary a scratch, á la Smokey & The Bandit.
Sometimes you get the bridge, other times the bridge gets you:
