I am not talking about the stuff they have lying on the shelves.. I understand why the paint markers have to come out on those. With thousands of different parts that all look alike, I can see why they would mark on a part what it is and where it came from.
Two weeks ago I was in a yard picking up some parts.. they guy had gotten them off of the car for me (It was not a u-pull it yard) and right in front of me, took out the paint marker and wrote all over the back of it what it was and what it was for.
It was one more useless step for him.. and one more step for me to clean it off before it went on the car.
Why?

Yep, if you brought it back later that day they'd have no idea what it was, or if it was even something they sold if it wasn't marked.
Or you bring the original bad part back and claim a refund because "it doesn't work".
That, and the force of habit.
He's probably had plenty of people decide not to buy it after he's gotten the part out, so he marks them regardless of whether or not you're standing there..
At the U Pull it places, usually I'll ask them not to mark it and they're happy to do so- just know that there will be no returns.

My favorite place is King of the Road Auto Parts and when they mark their parts they just put their initials.
Once a part is market with KRAP you know it is good!
They used to pronounce their yard on the YtoY (yard to yard) line as KayRap. I can't believe what I remember sometimes.
The YtoY was a telephone party line where the yards would ask for parts before the internet. There were other names for it as well.
Been there, brother...
