A pizza is best with a crust 1/4" thick or less, crisp but not crunchy, with a good tear and chew. People who think the crust is only a vehicle are badly missing the point. *All* parts of the pizza must work harmoniously for the true magic to come out.
Good sauce and cheese, and minimal but good-quality toppings are key. I used to be a "more is more" kind of guy, but I have gradually come to appreciate the zen goodness of just a few toppings (or even just cheese and sauce) baked on a good wood- or coal-fired hearth.
Okay, remember that disagreement regarding food we had a while back?
We're cool now.
Give me any pizza as long as it's good. I make from scratch thin crust. My wife makes deep dish Chicago from scratch including the sauce. Good times hot or cold!
Me, I like a deep dish kitchen sink kind of pizza. I'm talking when it looks like a pecan pie which got run down the wrong fillers line and has a gob of cheese on top. Throw the sauce on the bottom, meat and veggies, then top with a LOT of mozzarella and bake thoroughly. Yum. Godfather's Pizza used to make them sorta that way but they seem to have slid.
My favorite is saurkraut and spicy sausage from the pizza joint down the street. On a crust that isn't too thick or thin and slathered with garlic butter just before it is done baking. Good hot, cold or in between.
Tonight I had a Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza from Capital Creations. Ketchup, dijon mustard, onion, hamburger and bacon with cheddar cheese. Pretty berkeleying good. Too bad I may never know what it tastes like cold as there weren't none left over.
I love all Pizza, thick and thin and hand-tossed. To date, my favorite pizza is Gino's East in Chicago. Thinking about the crust keeps me up at night.

Having moved to Dayton, my fiancee introduced me to Marion's Pizza and said I HAD to get one with sausage.

Sounds pretty good. Also doesn't sound anything remotely like pizza.

Alas, all this talk about pizza reminded me of one thing I'd rather eat at any point during/post booze than pizza.

I've been dreaming of a proper deep dish pizza for years. It seems nobody in Atlanta makes one. I want a slice of pizza that is a meal in itself. I don't want a soda cracker with tomato sauce spritzed on it. I want something that can be eaten by hand if you dare, but really need a knife and fork. I hate Chicago, but darn their pizza is good.

Gino's East does make the best Deep Dish crust IMO. Too bad all the Gino's out in the south suburbs closed down.

If you want to pay the $$$, you can have the actual thing shipped to your door. We do it for friends and family all over the country. Take your pick.

We have a place here in town with great sketchy reheat by the slice pizza. I get the one that looks the best that day, but plain pepperoni is my favorite there. The cheese that burns around the edge of the pan and sticks to the crust is simply divine. One slice and an order of rolls (served with marinara and garlic butter) is an all-day meal.

Sigh. One of my biggest regrets in life is that I cannot eat pizza. I love it. Hot, cold, put everything including the kitchen sink.
But eating it leaves me curled up in a ball in agony, feeling like my digestive system is gonna give birth...
If you want lazy and good enough for EBT/Food stamps, Papa Murphy's. They make it up in store, wrap it in plastic for you to take home and bake it.
The best pizza I EVER get is a little mom-pop in the small town near my old home. No pizza out of there is EVER perfectly round.
And whoever dreamed up cutting a round pizza into squares is a moron.

don't you have a Pizzeria Uno in Buckhead? they do a reasonable facsimile of a chicago deep dish, IMO.
slightly OT, but there are few things i miss about the DC area. Ledo Pizza is one of them.

The poutine you've eaten does not like competition.
what is it about pizza that makes people get so weird and sometimes territorial about which one is the best?
it's dough with stuff piled on it. enjoy it for what it is- a meal you don't need silverware for..

BAD pizza is no more than dough with stuff piled on it.
GOOD pizza is pizza.

It's the difference between consensual sex in the missionary position for the sole purpose of pro-creation and a frantic drug-crazed "session" with the fireball you picked up at the club who teaches you new and interesting things you never even knew existed.
Less-is-more perfect pizza is great...
More-is-more mountain pizza is great...
Taco pizza, which is arguably not pizza, is still great...
The fighting only serves us to distract us from any form of pizza's superiority over tempeh.

You're near STL, right? I've ranted on here several times about my Imo's experience. 27 years later I am still willing to bitch about it. Absolutely the worst, most over-priced, over-hyped meal I ever ate.
