The article is real questions put to the two men and their answers, side-by-side. No commentary and no conclusions. Just straight up facts. Nothing inflammatory...
I guess with the thread locked the link is still there but, seriously, WTF?
We have like nine pages of scantily clad chicks... and you lock that thread?
I agree with you, GPS, it would seem ridiculous, and I usually enjoy your posts.
History, however, is a potent predictor of the future. Our history says "lock." I, too, am sad that we can't have the adult ideas here, but they are a choking hazard for too many members of our audience.

Yeah, no worky.
I occasionally get sucked into those threads. I guess this is a form of adult/flounder proofing.

Nothing is gained from political discussions on forums, and only one of two things will generally happen.
-
People will agree and nothing will change
-
People will disagree and can result in animosity between them
So there is literally no positive to political discussions in this type of environment, as 99.9% of the time no one's perspective or feelings on an issue will be changed.

I think they are down - it hangs right now. I found the link on slashdot so they are probably dealing with a lot of traffic.
It is sciencedebate.org/debate12. I'll not pursue the discussion on here further though.
Wow, you were shutdown in record time GPS. You must be on the troll watch-list. Or the powers thar be are profiling the Snorkelwackers

Geez, for a really smart guy, one would think you'd have figured-out what topics are chum in shark-infested waters. Oh, and as a reference, I offer you the "scantily clad chicks" thread; it didn't start out that way but "some people" chose to push the envelope anyway.
< Bows to Margie's appropriate reference to "choking hazards".

You are just saying that because you are a [ pejorative political term ] and you all think alike.
(Sigh)
I remember the good old days when nothing got locked, not even our front doors.

The first rule of troll club is...you have to be subtle.
Choking Hazards... outstanding.

Meh, I say if you don't like don't read it/watch it/debate it, but don't prevent others.

i disagree.. i have seen some pretty miraculous changes in the political outlooks of some people due to discussions on automotive forums. the trick is keeping it civil and acting like adults..
I think the biggest thing with political threads is not so much as changing one perspective, as it is finding someone that puts it in terms someone (who doesn't think they agree with it) can.
For instance, I'm what I'd call for Canada a pretty hardcore conservative. However, I like the idea (the IDEA) of drug rehabilitation programs. It was only after many more liberal minded people beat me over the head in terribly ineffective ways that one was able to show me how A) It would produce a better quality of life for all and B) would save money as reoffenders of any sort (or in this case, relapsers) costs mucho dollars.

Ya dirty, dope-smokin' hippie!
Seriously though, I like the political threads on here.
Most GRM users seem to be intelligent and articulate enough to debate on topics like this without turning to mud slinging and name-calling.
I like seeing different perspectives, it keeps my mind active.

Plus, every once in a while, its fun to watch those same intelligent people resort to petty name calling.

....and THAT is why the thread needed locking. At this time of year, in this political climate, it WOULD happen.
Nobody who mods feels like reading every post in a thread that is clearly a slow motion train wreck. Nobody feels the need to have a flurry of behind-the-scenes discussion of individual posts, just to decide when things have reached the point that they need to be stopped. That would happen, and it would be a complete waste of time for everybody involved.
If any of you feel the need to stir stuff up, go tinker in the garage until the urge passes.
[EDIT: I speak for myself, not the GRM management. What I put in this post is why I said I WANTED to lock the thread]
