I have not owned a video game system since the Sega Genesis.
I have not played any computer game in the past year.
If I wanted to buy a Wii, mostly for Tunawife to exercise (darn that word is hard to spell) with, but also for the kids to go crazy with (get energy out on cold days or something like that, I heard that they have MarioKart), what is the cheapest way to do it from my office chair?
This system, and all of its ancillaries, attachments, controllers, alternates, names, and whatnot is confusing.
Thanks
under $200 from Craigslist.

OK, Without leaving my office chair (ironically) is important.
Also, what do I need to buy? Wii, Wii fit, Wii U? Balance board? Controllers? Games? I don't understand.
oh, Wii and Wii Fit Bundle. should come with the fitness board, controllers, etc. Mario Kart is pretty fun as well.
Also, look up soft modding the wii and adding an external drive to backup the $50 CDs to. I have kids, trust me on wanting this.
I used to do the EA Active deal. It worked pretty well, better than Wii Fit. I should bust that thing out again.
Wii's are CHEAP right now, so I'd pick one up. I just soft-modded one (it is really easy to do) and it is awesome. It has turned into a retro gaming machine for my living room!

what does 'soft modding' mean?

Go to http://www.wiibrew.org. Poke around there for a bit. Put it this way: you will be able to play Sega Genesis (along with NES, SNES, Sega Master System, Turbografx 16, Game Boy, Gameboy Advance, N64, etc...) on the Wii.

Gotcha. I can't see that at work, but honestly none of that appeals to me. I'm looking at this as a cheaper-than-a-yoga-slash-aerobics-studio-for-tunawife thing. Also, mario kart rocks.
The homebrew channel and USB Loader allows to to run your expensive game disks from an external drive vs popping them in and out.
My wife got the wii fit bundle for our wii a few years ago. It's mine now! I like some of the games, and the yoga and strength exercises can give you a pretty good workout. wii is near the end of it's product life, so you can either get a deal on a new one, or snag a working one off craigslist for couch cushion money.
Bought ours from the local Goodwill for $100 with two controllers and they had a Wii board for $100. Its tricky getting the board configured to work, but there are some great info on that on the net.
Games are cheap at the local game store/CL/eBay and yes they do have Mario Kart, but more importantly they have Mario Kart 64 available for download, which is a better game IMO.
Lots of workout "games" like Zumba, etc. Personally some workout DVDs and a scale are much more cheap and gets the same or better results, but to each their own.
The Wii has some web capability to allow watching videos online, etc. So that's a plus. It will need an internet connection (has wireless built-in) to perform software updates, etc.
Soft modding is cool if you're tech savvy, but isn't critical if you teach your kids how to properly care for the discs (or if they are too young, keep them out of reach so the parents can do it for them).
The Wii+ controllers are a good investment as they are more accurate and make the games more enjoyable, they just plug into the bottom of the standard controllers (or you can get them as a single unit and rechargeable with a base if you shop around). Don't bother with the clip-on accessories as they are cheasy. Do invest in rubber covers because the kids will swing the controllers around/drop them, etc.
You can typically play the games seated, with the exception of Wii fit board games, once you know the movements.
Good luck.
I just bought one at the local game stop. It is refurbished. I paid under $200.00 for a bunch of games AND the wii fit game and balance board. THe wii fit game and board is the best for exercise.

okay, buy the following:
A used refurbed system with motion plus from gamestop (79.99)
Buy mariokart (less than 19.99)
buy a used controller with motion plus (19.99)
buy a balance board (19.99)
Buy wii fit+ game (9.99)
This should get you a good start to having fun and excersizing. Unfortunately, not all of those parts are available currently from game stop. Ebay could help in this case.
If you want another cool game, get wii sports resort. It has bowling, ping pong, basketball, frisbee, golf, etc...
Hope this helps!

Exactly what I was looking for, Rob. It's $145 from the local Gamestop without Mariokart et al. Not bad. Tell me what motionplus means and if I need to pay the extra $10 for the system with it and if I need to pay the extra $20 per controller to get it.
I think the newer wii controllers have "motionplus" built in.
Edit: Yup. Just checked. Motionplus used to be an accessory, but the new controllers have it built in. Just look at the front of the controller. Should say "wii motionplus inside" or something like that.

Yeah: What is it? Is it worth paying for?
The original Wii could be a little "notchy" and imprecise. The motionplus smooths everything out and makes the game play MUCH better. It is simply a more accurate and smoother controller. (or add on to the controller)
BTW, if you pay the extra $10.00 for the motion plus system, the controller that comes with it will be a motion plus controller. You would only need to buy/ upgrade any other controllers you get.

You guys are the best. It's all in the car. I've never even been inside a Gamestop. Everything was used, bought a wii, a board, fit+, sports thingie, an extra controller and nunchuk, $180 with tax and the little card thingie to get games cheaper for a while.
Thanks!
Sweet! Good work!
The instructions for "synching" everything can be a bit vague or difficult. Just pop on here and I am sure one of us can help out.
The wii fit board will only sync when the wii fit game disc is in.
Also, there is a setting in the home screen that allows you to adjust depending if your sensor strip is below or above the TV. This is VERY important.
