My computer kept telling me to upgrade to windows 10, so fine on Friday I did that. Before I shut my computer down on Friday I had three working email accounts. Why the berkeley does a berkeleying windows update mean I have to set up all my emails again. Why can't the berkeleying thing remember the berkeleying settings? I can't berkeleying remember pop 3 imap something or other or what my berkeleying server address is! I copied them from my phone and they are wrong now. So I have one working email now out of three. berkeley you very much Bill Gates.
Because Windows 10 is a completely new operating system and its written by Microsoft's best group of Indian software writers.
You screwed up and you shouldn't have "upgraded" as it wasn't an "update"
They also warned you to backup your settings and data beforehand, but you didn't do that, did you?
I was not ever asked to back anything up. I certainly would have done so if asked. In any event, the only thing affected is my email.
I backed up everything and my update worked.. however my computer is now massively slow. I'm told the fix is a wipe and clean install. Joke's on me.

Wait for 10.1. Always wait for the update of the new version.

I bought a new laptop for my wife a bit over a month ago. It came with Windows 10.
I am already absolutely infuriated with it. I have never seen a computer just silently refuse to work like this thing does. I set it up with myself as an administrator account and my wife with a "regular" account. A few weeks in, it started "failing to contact Group Policy service" so regular accounts couldn't log in. So, I had to change her to an administrator to be able to use it. It sometimes takes several minutes to log in or out instead of the usual almost instant. It seems to randomly not be able to connect to the many "cloud" services it needs to function. Updates in particular seem to stall and not happen, especially for the "apps".
I also wound up uninstalling Google Chrome because that just stopped launching as well. I could see a chrome process started in task manager, but no browser window ever opened.
I am hoping the "November update" (aka 10.1) helps. But it has not chosen to download itself yet...
My computer keeps asking me to "upgrade." How do you write "berk no!" in binary?
In reply to Appleseed:
Uninstall the "update" from Add/Remove programs and then block it in your Windows Update.

Yeah, it is there, likely hidden in any agreements you agreed to to start the process.
Oh well, if you have web access, you can usually access your ISP or Mail vendor's site and get the necessary settings for POP and/or IMAP settings.
In reply to WilD:
Might look at loading Ubuntu or Mint Linux on a spare USB key and firing that off on the laptop to see if it will work better for you and your wife.

Seriously, Microsoft is really not helping themselves lately (more so than usual) so I'd get as far away from their stuff as possible and if you have to use it, use it in a virtual environment so you can turn it off when you don't need it.
You can try one or both of the above Linux distro's for free on a USB key without making any changes to the system. You can also check the system for Linux compatibility before you make any decisions to replace Windows with Linux.
My father asked for help on his Win10 PC and I couldn't make heads or tails of that thing. Took 10 minutes to find the most basic things, if I had hair I would have puled it out. I am amazed that in 6 years since I left, Windows has only gotten worse.
I accidentally did the upgrade. It gave me a full on pop-up window after weeks of the little sidebar thing, and I clicked the upgrade later option.. It immediately started downloading, lol. It installed fully in under 2 hours. Only real complaint so far is that I can't open Windows Explorer from where I have it pinned to the taskbar. Have to search something in the search bar and then click and I can navigate no issues. Weird.

That was my experience. Were you asked to back anything up?
I finally did it because the last one was such a piece of E36 M3. But every version has more E36 M3 that i don't need and less E36 M3 that I do need. I see now the snipping tool is gone. Oh wait, its there, but it is buried under three layers of bullE36 M3. I'm an excavator operator. I don't have time in my life to sit down and relearn how to run a computer every time microsoft or whoever feels the need to roll out a new berkeleying model.
Maybe this should just be filed under rants.
Right now is not a good time to either upgrade to 10 or to update 10. Some serious bug problems. In fact I'm rather surprised you were able to download the install, ad Microsoft has temporarily suspended it.
I will not "upgrade" to ten simply because MS is insistent that I do so. I am also extremely happy with 7

Looks like the new laptop shall be a Mac. Glad this thread was started.

I was not asked to backup anything to my recollection. I just hit the windows button and search for stuff, I don't want to dig through it either.
Windows 10 will never live on any machine I have to twiddle.
It will easily cause a mass migration to Linux.
I'll be the contrarian. I have had no issues at all with 10 and haven't noticed any performance issues.
Take off the blinders and put down the koolaide.
Look at your network traffic and see how much it phones home.

None of that means anything to me. I turn it on. it comes on. Everything works as it should when I want it to. What more do I need?

Seriously folks, do just a little research before performing a major upgrade like this, especially with Windows as they never, ever go as well as they expect. I say this as a professional in the Windows Support world that has worked with supporting and using Microsoft products for well over 20 years now, Microsoft's constant screw ups and near total grasp on the business world has paid the bills quite nicely, but for my own sanity I use as few Microsoft products as possible when I'm not at work. Just not worth the headaches.

Something with the semblance of security perhaps? Please do not do anything on that system that you don't mind sharing with the rest of the world. This includes online banking and purchasing, your taxes, etc.
I did the upgrade on day one. Got the t-shirt. Literally, i have a Windows Insider launch day t-shirt.
Meh. It's a spare system. The updates in the first month or so really improved it. I have picked up the system a few times recently and found it to not be locked. I'm also seeing a few spots that don't work so well. I might do a restore, but I also created a Windows 8.1 restore disk before the upgrade, so I can always go back to factory.
I think they got the general UI layout right. They did a crap job of actually implementing it. I think it should have baked a little longer, to be released in Q1 2016.
The privacy mess is inexcusable. The day job includes having to evaluate new software. Windows 7 will no longer be available in about ten months. I'm not looking forward to evaluating 10.
