Does anyone know how to repair the win7(x86_64) windows installer? I have one that I think got hosed due to some bad sectors(not really sure, though ) on my work laptop's hard drive.

We are in the middle of a big project, behind schedule and I need to fix the msi installer so I can re-install my vpn client so I can get work done at home. I've been working at the office most nights until atleast 8 or 9 pm, but have seen a few 11pm nights at the office recently. I had a trouble ticket w/ the vpn client company, but after being passed around several times and being on the phone for more time than I care to admit I ended up w/ a tier 2 guy who didn't know much more than I do, but instead wanted to prove how I was stupid am and how he was gonna save me but would only tell me "what was necessary". I've done support for people and I didn't/don't talk down to my clients just b/c I have something that they need. I don't do it, and don't appreciate it being done to me. On top of all that, he called when I was in the middle of putting out a fire, and when I didn't answer he closed my ticket after only a few hours. And this was after not calling me back from the day b/4 when he said he would. < I'm sorry...venting over .....now>

I'm gonna get the drive replaced asap, but until then I'm kinda handicapped. Any help would be appreciated.

First, let me say that I'm no expert. I know enough about Windows to run Ubuntu Linux. But I would say you need to wipe the disk and re-install.

In reply to 1988RedT2: That's not an option right now. I know that there are ways to just install the installer, but I can't the old installer "uninstalled" b/c its corrupted. I will re-install once I get the new drive, but can't now.

start -> run/searchbar type "SFC /scannow" for a start.

I'm assuming you've done the correct thing of running a full AV scan?

In reply to Grtechguy:

I tried the "SFC /scannow" at least once but I would need to do it again to remember te exact output.

The level 2 guy I've been dealing w/ called me back today and we actually got the old version of the vpn client uninstalled. I think we got everything anyway. When I re-install the vpn client, I get permission errors on one of the registry keys that's associated w/ symantec. We're using the corp package as our firewall and virus scanner. My user account is in the administrator group so I don't think that's an issue. I even tried creating another account that has admin rights to install the client and I got the same error. I'm gonna do more digging when I get home, but I do have a version of the vpn client installed on the opensuse install I have on the same laptop. Push comes to shove, I can use that and get some productivity back. At this point, I'm just trying to save the vacation that I had planned to take off. I'll report back when I find something out.

Thanks again........

The registry hives have their own rights, usually they map to the rest of the rights on the system, sometimes they don't.

Run regedit and right-click on the hive that's causing the issues. Select permissions and make sure Administrators are listed. Click on Advanced and check the box marked "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" Click on apply and then OK.

you may have to do this to the other Hives as well.

"Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" -- This might be the issue. I remember seeing this w/ a few of the offending keys. I know for a fact that I didn't check the box for a few of the keys. I'm actually running on my linux partition now, so I've got a work-around until I can get the windows side fixed. I want to get some tests done b/4 I goto bed, and start the msizip after I get done. I'll check back in later....thanks again!! I might be in the bed b/4 5am tonight.....
