New to me na miata has an exhaust heat shield rattle. Motivates me to replace entire exhaust, just need time and a place to work on it.

Anyways, the heat shield hold down bolt is loose but the head rusted away to about a 9.5mm, can't get a good grip. Vice grips twist the bolt and threaten breakage.

Women have been known to wear bobbie-pins.

The hair tie is thinner than mechanics wire and more melt proof than duct tape. Slack is taken up, the rattle is gone, this will live here until this car wears a nice exhaust.

I didn't expect this thread to be about hair ties

Those things are super-handy for all kinds of hack jobs. Not in the same league as zip ties or hose clamps, but often handy.

Start soaking it with PB Blaster now. By the time it rusts down to an even 9mm you'll get it right out!

pb blaster plus hot exhaust is bad mmkaay. The billowing smoke and fried housing on the o2 sensor in my last car will tell you the same.
