I wonder how much play this will get in the MSM...

Can't say I'm pleased, with 11 and 9 year old girls.

Should be an interesting debate. Equal is equal, but I think it's more likely they'll do away with the registration requirement. That was penned in an era where it was far harder to keep individual records on people. If the military needs a draft they have more than enough digital records to know exactly who they can select. I think you'll see them drop the required registration and kick the can down the road on wether or not women could be drafted. They'll wait to make that decision until a draft is actually needed, and just hope it never is.

I’m all for it.  Equal is equal.

Maybe we’ll reconsider where we want to send our soldiers to die.

I'm not sure how you could hope for equal rights in this country without these sorts of changes.  There's a lot of work to do elsewhere besides this, though, to get there.

Long overdue in my opinion. Either everyone should be required to register or no one.

Good, maybe this will be what finally kills selective service.

In reply to spitfirebill :

HAH, you're going to have to wait a while for that, at the very least until a large enough number of the warmongering E36 M3whistles in the government start croaking from old age.

Won't make any difference, Grizz.  There will just be another batch right behind them.  Note that the "left" party now wants war with everyone.  You try to pull your troops out of some E36 M3 hole we should not have been at in the first place and you're Putin's Bitch for even thinking about it.

I was the first year to have to register for the new draft.  I'm the year that always gets screwed.  SS retirement age is now a moving target, etc.

I hope we never have to rely on a draft again, and it should be an absolute last resort, but equal is equal.

A few years ago when I used to frequent the lunch time think tank circuit an economist by the name of Walter Oi was lionized by libertarians due to his role in ending the draft.  According to one obit he thought it was unfair to have a military consisting of youth with low pay and it would be better to have a military with better pay.

Just recently I've seen criticisms of this in that since the end of the draft there have been considerably more foreign deployments since the end of the draft and that the costs with an all volunteer military are staggering in comparison.  Some of those numbers are in a link below.

Military Times article.

It seems a fairly well balanced article on the topic of selective service/draft but it does not address the OPs concern about the recent court case.

I'll leave with a quote from a Thomas Sowell book I'm reading ( leaving out what he might have to say on 'equal' ).

"nations in general will make war whenever they have a prospect of getting anything by it."  John Jay, 'The Federalist Papers.'

This doesn't work either as it follows the arbitrary fascism of an A thru Z hierarchy that must be toppled. wink

Trump banned Transexuals from the military, so there is no grounds for the court to rule they must register for selective service.

My Dad a combat Vet from WW2 offered to support me if I choose to go to Canada  when I was called up  by the draft.

Luckily a friend had notified my father of my call up a week before I received notice. By that time I’d dodged the Draft by joining the Navy. Which turned out to be a very good thing for me.

HA!    You want something fixed, force real equality....     Most states needed things like Alimony reform for years..   It didn't go anywhere until judges started ordering women to pay alimony, maintenance, whatever it is the state calls it..   All the sudden just like that states banned permanent alimony payments and had all kinds of other much needed reform...

So count me in as solidly for and against this..    For it because it will bring much needed change, against it because of the cost it will take to sort through enough women using government methods to develop a capable infantry unit with these methods.

This whole thing is absurd.

Elenor Roosevelt said,

"“The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!”"

It is what make them what they are.    Insert females squarely into the mix of what a bunch of crayon eating Marines really look like out in the field and you change the dynamic.  Maybe for the better, maybe for the worse, but it WILL change things in a very dramatic way.   Those grunts will act different, they will treat that female different...    Does this improve a units combat readiness should be the ONLY question!

Hence why this lawsuit was brought forth to end this silliness and allow women to hold their rightful superior position.

I missed the draft but I did get no fewer than 4  notices from the selective service warning me that I needed to register OR ELSE.  Of course I was overseas and in a war zone already at the time so I informed the beurocrats where they could stick their notices and where they could find me if they would like me to do the sticking.

FRANCIS: Yeah. I think Judith's point of view is very valid, Reg, provided the Movement never forgets that it is the inalienable right of every man--

STAN: Or woman.

FRANCIS: Or woman... to rid himself--

STAN: Or herself.

FRANCIS: Or herself.

REG: Agreed.

FRANCIS: Thank you, brother.

STAN: Or sister.

FRANCIS: Or sister. Where was I?

REG: I think you'd finished.

FRANCIS: Oh. Right.

REG: Furthermore, it is the birthright of every man--

STAN: Or woman.

REG: Why don't you shut up about women, Stan. You're putting us off.

STAN: Women have a perfect right to play a part in our movement, Reg.

FRANCIS: Why are you always on about women, Stan?

STAN: I want to be one.

REG: What?

STAN: I want to be a woman. From now on, I want you all to call me 'Loretta'.

REG: What?!

LORETTA: It's my right as a man.

JUDITH: Well, why do you want to be Loretta, Stan?

LORETTA: I want to have babies.

REG: You want to have babies?!

LORETTA: It's every man's right to have babies if he wants them.

REG: But... you can't have babies.

LORETTA: Don't you oppress me.

REG: I'm not oppressing you, Stan. You haven't got a womb! Where's the foetus going to gestate?! You going to keep it in a box?!

LORETTA: crying

JUDITH: Here! I-- I've got an idea. Suppose you agree that he can't actually have babies, not having a womb, which is nobody's fault, not even the Romans', but that he can have the right to have babies.

FRANCIS: Good idea, Judith. We shall fight the oppressors for your right to have babies, brother. Sister. Sorry.

REG: What's the point?

FRANCIS: What?

REG: What's the point of fighting for his right to have babies when he can't have babies?!

FRANCIS: It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression.

REG: Symbolic of his struggle against reality.
