I tried my hand at some homebrew yesterday. Fun experience and in a few weeks I hope the result tastes good! Thought I would share.

Yummy. I love the smell of wort. It's fun to take a taste before throwing in the hops, too.

When I was a little kid, 4 or 5 years old I remember my Dad was experimenting with brewing his own beer. I remember because somehow I managed to knock over a couple gallons of his brew in the basement and didn't tell anyone for a couple days. Ooops.

Why is there wort in your priming bucket? You did let it ferment inbetween for about 5 days, right? Or did you discover some new shortcut?

My fermenter from William's Brewing looks the same way; It is just like a priming bucket except the spigot has a nut with a tube that turns down 90 degrees instead of a regular one.

Rack from that bucket to the priming bucket via the valve. I love it, although siphoning is still a valuable skill for anyone to have, especially in this economy.

I go from the pot to a priming bucket and use that to funnel into my primary which is a 6 gallon glass carboy, secondary is a 5 gallon carboy then into a corny keg.

Well, call me old fashioned, but I go from my stainless pot to a 5 gallon plastic water bottle, then to the priming bucket. I gave up on siphoning too. I just pour it off carefully and stop when I get to the gunk.

I have no idea what I am doing. Just following the instructions. I figure the first batch will be the "learning experience" and my second batch will be better. The batch we made is called California Common (Anchor Steam). I hope it is good. I did kind of mess up on the hops part; oh well. As long as it has alcohol, all should be good.

Anyone know of where I can get labels made? I am thinking about putting my neighbor on the front. He is a really funny old stoner dude and would make a great face for a beer.

Just buy some blank name badge labels and print your own. Any word processor will have templates for standard size labels. You can also just print them out in strips and wrap the center of the bottle, labels are a PITA to remove when you go to reuse your bottles.

The neighbor guy was better when I thought he had a yellow cane.

Be sure to PM me if you have any questions; I've got quite a few batches under my belt, and I've done everything wrong at least once so I can tell you what not to do haha.

And for labels, you can print them out on standard paper with an Inkjet printer, and then cut them out and use glue stick to put them on. It doesn't look super-professional, but it gets the point across.

I'm brewing up a rye Berliner Weisse tomorrow. And my blonde ale is about ready to bottle. Mmmmm beer. I'm going to go get me one of those.

One of the worst home brew beers I ever tasted was labeled "Old Goat Scrotum". The name was appropriate. That was at a Mensa party.

It is my first brew and I am doing a California Common (Anchor Steam; it was free). It has been fermenting for five days and I have some time today; I am thinking about bottling today. Would it be too early?

Also, when I put the airlock (half-filled with water) on the lid, it cracked around the seal. I taped the area around the airlock as good as I could. However, I didn't see the crazy amount of bubbles everyone talks about. Could this be a problem with my primary fermentation?

Sorry for all the questions; I am wiped out today from a long day at TPC yesterday.

If you didn't have a good air lock, the bubbles could have escaped from there. If you squeeze the primary fermenter, do bubbles come out? If not, then you didn't have a good air lock. If bubbles do come out, then you may not have had good fermentation, and that's a problem, because it if ferments too much in the bottles, they'll burst. Was there foam on top any any point? If so, you are probably OK. I don't know what "crazy amount of bubbles" is. Mine go from just a few to a steady stream to just a few.

I almost always bottle at 5 days.
