Crikey it seems like he has been retiring for a year already. If they slather much more drivel on him I'm going to puke. I thought over a year ago he was simply phoning it in and it was past time for him to retire.

You can solve this anger by not watching TV.

Maybe he was hypnotized by evil dogs.

That's crazy talk! When something bothers one person, it needs to be removed from existence, no matter who else it affects!
i thought he was phoning it in a decade ago... and i was sick of his piano playing sidekick about 25 years ago..

Well I gave up on his show, but its all over the news now.
I also realized I should have just posted this in the minor rants thread.
Well the City of Kankakee gave him a rocking chair made out of one of the Gazebos he gifted to the City to embarass them. It was a whole freaking event here.
Now he can retire.
I used to watch him nearly every night in the 80's when he came on after Carson. Since he moved to CBS and started wearing a suit, I don't think I've ever really watched one of his shows.
I did read an article in Rolling Stone about him that made me think he'd be an interesting guy to hang out with.
He's a solid dude and incredibly intelligent. I do feel that the cookie cutter format of the show crushes it as a creative outlet for him, he's also tired and would like to spend more time with family. He also has a major regret, not spending more time at tracks and learning to drive on track at speed. Definitely worth chatting up about cars and racing if you get the chance. I hope that he and Leno are able to bury the hatchet (it was business) and put together an internet car program together, another comedian is working hard to mend that bridge in order to make it happen.
He's done a lot to support Indycar on his show, showing highlights, talking about the races, etc. Of course, he has a financial interest in the success of the series, but I'll take it any way I can get it.
The episode of "Comedians in cars getting coffee" with him is great, too. He and Seinfeld drive the SBF-swapped Volvo wagon that he and Paul Newman had twins of. He may not be the same kind of car guy that Leno is, but he's certainly a car guy.
Having said all that, my trajectory watching him was similar to others here. In the 80s on NBC, he was must-watch, a brilliant, subversive, sarcastic master. The CBS show was never quite as good, but it was still pretty solid through the 90s and into the 2000s. His post-9/11 show was emotional and cathartic for a lot of people. But after that, he became lazier and more blatantly political, the jokes all started sounding the same, younger rivals came along, and I just lost interest. So I'd say it's time for him to go. But I'll always respect him for what he was.

not everything... just stupid stuff.
I hate people that make me feel small
I hate having my back against a wall
I hate being talked down to...
