I'll never use UPS for anything. When they aren't able to quote a price within 200% of the actual price. Screw them!

In reply to Duke :

I do not believe you can insure financial instruments for their face value. I mean, you can pay the insurance if you want, but they won't pay out. Meaning, a lost $900k check is not going to result in a payment of $900k from UPS. They'll tell you to cancel the check and refund your shipping costs. Also, $900k insurance from UPS would be insanely expensive.

They can. If you can’t understand their pricing structure, then it’s time to check a little further.

We ship millions of dollars worth of parts with UPS. Very, very few problems. We do get complaints from Canadians but usually that’s people not understanding that an international border is a real thing.

No, that's people either not knowing about, and/or being really angry about UPS' ridiculously expensive customs clearance charges - something a business should make very clear to their customers, and almost none do

Nice try Keith

We use a variety of shippers, including UPS, and they haven't proven to be any worse than the others.  Price wise they are among the lowest domestically.  Their shipping interface is also better than FedEx.  For most of our international shipments we use a freight forwarder, especially given the countries we ship to are mainly corrupt beyond belief...Brazil topping the list, with South Africa a close second.  The most difficult country to get something through however is Canada.  They have customs on steroids.

To the original post, something is not right here.  Most places would never cut a check for that, a transfer would be SOP.  There is more to this story.

You can explain it, but they won't listen. We have a page on our site that explains it all in detail, but you have to read it. And there are ways to avoid the fees. But you have to stop complaining and do something.

Just wait until the first time the post office loses your package. You then learn where the UPS value is. People swear they don't need tracking until they do.

Sorry Keith, you're wrong here. When I go online to get a price quote, it should be clearly stated that the price I'm being quoted will only be honored in select few locations, if at all.  Or that the price is just an arbitrary number that came as a result of a brown magic 8 ball

When I get calls from customers about pricing (we're the manufacturer, we don't sell to the end-user, the folks I'm talking to most often) I'm sure to tell them that pricing is set at the dealer level and that I'd happily get them in touch with a dealer for pricing.

Reliable pricing is one of the easiest , basic, and most necessary parts of doing business. If they can't figure out how to do that, they have failed.

If I had that much money coming to me I’d probably go pick it up.

Heck, I've driven long distance to pick up car parts because I didn't want to risk them getting damaged in shipping.

Getting back to the OP position, YES, UPS sucks.  Hard.  I ran a shipping department for a few years, and I have shipped things of all types and sized for over 25 years.  FedEx reliability is 1000000000 times better than brown, and their customer service is outstanding where UPS is staffed by one mean old lady who hates people.  I lost package here and there I can understand, but UPS is systemically bad, especially when you have FedEx right there with better pricing, better software, better options, better support and better...well everything.
