Forbes just came out with it's list of the top ten poorest cities in the country, and my city made the list.
Worse than that, a city about 50 miles from here also made the list.
So out of the entire doggone country, not one but 2 cities in my area made a list of the worst 10.
No wonder everyone around here is so down. This region has some issues.
Well, now that I've had my morning pick-me-up, I guess I'll get back to work! Woo Hoo!

Were the other 8 in Michigan?
A poor cuty means lower cost of living, = more money for Challengers.
Glass is half full....
Cleveland was on there fer sure
Boo freakin' hoo you're still relatively well off.

Is the logistics base still in Albany? Uncle Sam is a stable employer.

Gameboy has a very valid point. Travel a bit outside of the US and Canada and you will have a better appreciation for life in Detroit. Want a real thrill? Take a walk in downtown Kingston Jamaica.

Now you know no one can walk in Kingston when they are getting dragged down the street by their wallets.

I don't think Gameboy has a valid point at all. He never asked what my experiences were, and has no idea what he is talking about if he is trying to say I shouldn't be concerned.
I've spent over 10 years of my life living in third world countries, including Haiti. And, yes, I lived for a while in Kingston as well.
I'd be happy to share stories if you'd like.
I see no reason why a fellow shouldn't be concerned about a report that indicates his community is doing poorly.
I can agree it's a reason for concern, but it's nothing to get all depressed or worried about (you say "everyone is so down")

Yes, MCLB is still here, and is likely to remain.
That's 1 good employer....
Oh, wait. We've also got Miller.
That's 2...
Beer and military. Nice.

I didn't say I was.
But yes, a lot of people are. It's sad. Frankly, I found there to be a more positive attitude in the community when I lived in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

These are a few of my favorite things.
Also "gentlemens" clubs, which were also easy to find when I was there.

Sorry, I'm siding with SVreX here. He has every right to be concerned about the area he lives in. He's not dissing other worse off areas or countries but voicing concern about his area. I live in SE Mi, and while I'm one of the lucky ones who still has a good paying and now apparently secure job, I still have a great deal of concern about the area, the people, the economy etc. That doesn't' mean I discount the issues other parts of the country or world are having. And because there are other worse off areas (not many in the US) doesn't give me a right to care about where I live or the people who live here.

I had a similar experience during a trip to the North coast of South America a few years ago. Suriname is one of the poorest countries on that continent. Many, if not most, houses are built from cast-off roofing tin and cardboard, warped plywood, etc. The citizens are happy if they have a bunch of plantains and a bucket of fish. They are a very tolerant society; very acceptive of folks from other cultures. A real melting pot.
What impressed me was that most everyone we met had a big toothy smile on their face. They are dirt poor, but don't seem to know it.

I lived in Flint whilst in college.
Most of those jerks deserved to be poor.
Got lectured for an hour from a guy who wanted $25 to help tow his car. He was on his bike, in January (snowing) and said he got it at a yard sale, at 6:30PM. Then saw him go into HIS FRIGGIN HOUSE.
Got stopped by the same guy, for the same reason, the next day - tore his head off because I was on campus this time.

I guess I was only semi-suprised to see Macon on the list. Having been born and raised here, it doesn't seem that poor to me. Of course, I've always lived on a shoestring, but I figured that's just me. I do know our local civil service workers are badly overworked with sheer volume.
OTOH, not long ago Macon placed #1 in the country in a survey of municipal water quality. Our local Visitors and Convention Center was real proud about the water thing; I wonder how they'll react to this latest lovely news. Maybe they'll come up with a new City Motto:
Macon, Georgia: You won't make much money, but you'll LOVE our tap water!

Hey, finally a 'crap cities' list St. Louis isn't on! Suck it, El Centro, CA!
Just joshing, of course. Sorry to hear about your plight. At least you won't get gunned down for looking at somebody wrong, or being on the wrong street, like you will here, according to whomever it is that knows everything about everywhere that writes these articles.
Atleast you're not in El Paso

Beauty website: El Paso No. 1 for ugly men
By Paula Monarez Diaz / El Paso Times
Posted: 10/21/2009 07:19:25 AM MDT
EL PASO -- Don't look in the mirror, El Paso men.
Total Beauty.com claims you are the ugliest dudes in the country.
The beauty advice website did a study on the education stats and health rates of every city in the U.S. The result: The top eight cities with guys who just don't make the grade.
The website also looked at contraceptive and erotica sales, number of gyms and the population's exercise habits, obesity and smoking rates.
Here is what the magazine said about El Paso men:
"We're not looking for Stephen Hawking level brain-age - just a good, solid education. But nearly 15 percent of the dudes in this Lone Star city have less than a 9th grade education. The city also suffers from a notably high rate of obesity, 32 percent are in below average health and 30 percent do not exercise regularly, which is probably why there are so few gyms in town. There is such a thing as too much Tex-Mex."
The rest of the list: No. 2: Hagerstown, Md.; No. 3: Miami, Fla.; No. 4: Greensboro, N.C. ; No. 5: Mobile, Ala. and Huntington, W.Va. (tie); No. 6: Detroit; No. 7: Philadelphia; and No. 8: Houston.
