Nana. Hahaha that's great. He even acts like an old grandma.

Big wrestling related news, because of dubbing our 3rd line the "HBK" line, after the skaters names, the actual HBK Shawn Michaels is making a huge deal about coming to town for game 5 against the Lightning this weekend.

I miss liking wrestling, and I've been finding myself digging up videos from when I was kid lately on youtube. Especially that crazy Japanese stuff, but mostly the old ECW.

Seeing highlights and commentary about things in the wrestling world these days, I wonder how Vince McMahon stays in business.

There is a documentary on Netflix about the Iron Sheik. It's pretty interesting, but also pretty sad.

They covered that in the film. It was a big deal to the organization (WWF?) because they were supposed to be mortal enemies.

I don't remember exactly where it was.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan ran a gym in Titusville, Florida after he quit, I met him once or twice. It was kind of sad, you could tell not all the lights were on.

Sorry if this is a thread jack. I never could get into WWF type wrestling, it just didn't do anything for me at all.

Then one day in the early nineties a good friend of mine took me to see minor-minor league pro wrestling at a firehouse somewhere near Trenton NJ.

IT WAS AWESOME!!

It was entertaining even before I started drinking $1 beers. Then the midgets took to the ring....

I was as hard core of a fan as there was from about 1980 until 1990 or so. Pretty much disappeared from my radar until about 6 years ago when my oldest son (who was 6 at the time) started to watch it. Now all 3 of my kids like it. They're not hard core fans like I was, but they watch it. It's nothing like what it used to be. I will say some of those dudes are serious athletes, the E36 M3 they do is crazy...even if it is scripted, it takes skill to pull it off.

One other thing, the women wrestlers are... Let's just say that's the one time I really stop and pay attention.

It's one of the most difficult professions to be in. The amount of travel, number of performances put on and the physical damage endured with incredibly little recovery time allowed is heartbreaking. I'm amazed by any wrestlers that don't become addicted to painkillers or steroids (and not to get bigger and stronger, but merely to assist in recovery in order to continue to soldier on). It's tragic as the talent to develop and maintain a persona, follow a fairly charographed script and do the physical things that they're capable of lends itself to so many other sustainable fields.

I find professional wrestling fascinating. My dad was a fan back in the day, and looked up to Bruno Sammartino because he was an Italian immigrant like he was. We watched WWF, AWA, NWA, and WCW all the time. I still watch occasionally, because the behind the scenes stuff still interests me.

Also, the mortality rate of these guys is staggering. Of course, all the matches and story lines are booked and choreographed months in advance, but they still get hurt, and that leads down a scary path of pill addiction, PED's, etc for a lot of these guys. A lot of the guys I watched growing up are either sad shells of themselves (like Lex Luger) or dead (like Randy Savage, who died 5 years ago today).

I have it on good authority he lives in the Hastings area now.

I grew up in Eagan, and I recall once in the early 80s seeing Hulk Hogan, Nick Bockwinkel and Bobby Heenan all sitting together at a pizza joint. I was 12 or 13 at the time and could not believe my eyes. That was in the hey day of the old AWA back then.

My brother played soccer at a field in Mendota Heights around this same time period, and out of a neighboring house walked none other than Nick Bockwinkel himself.

I also saw Rick Martel and Jim Harrell aka Boris Zhukov (he had the biggest head I think I've ever seen in my life) in this area a few years later.

Funny about Ric Flair as Nana. My kids see Flair now on tv and they too said he looks like an old grandma lol.

I would have loved to be at some of the old ECW shows in south Philly when ECW was really gaining momentum. I could never figure out the relationship between Todd Gordon and Paul E.

Sorry this thread has brought out my old school wrestling geekness.

Don't care much for pro wrestling, but do have an interesting story. I was installing an alarm system in a new store. Two guys were installing carpet. One thought he was a real Casanova, and was putting the hard moves on a housewife. She did not approve, and after telling him to leave her alone a few times, she suggested he read the name on the work order. Terry Bollea. Yup, he was messing with Hulk Hogan's wife. Not a good idea.

The good old days. I grew up with one of my personal favorite stories. Im actually in some sort of fashion, related to jesse ventura. He was tail ending his awa career about the time i got into wrestling. Family xmas party was at the governors mansion while he was in office. Ive played pool on the gubernatorial pool table. was on its way out. Greg Gagne baron, the road warriors, all those guys were either retiring or going on to wwf. It was a neat time. I quit watching a few years ago, mostly because the stories werent fun anymore. Sure theres still heels and faces but....not the same.

Some of the stories that the guys from the 80's and 90's are INSANE. Back then, before the internet changed everything, a lot of these guys would extend their personas outside of the ring in order not to break character.

I heard a good one about Randy Savage refusing to break character at a Waffle House. He was tired and hungry after a show, and went there to eat. The people there were taking forever to make the food, and then a guy came in who was a regular talking about how he just got married, and all the waitresses and cooks stopped making food to talk to him. He freaked out, and in full Macho Madness, got in a knife fight with the newlywed! He grabbed the closest knife he could, which was a butter knife, and it didn't even matter. The cops showed up, and he fought the guy AND the cops! It took a K-9 to bite him in the rear end to finally stop him.

It amazes me the age of the guys doing it these days. Like Undertaker is over 50, still dead lifts 500lbs and has a 36" vertical leap. I'm surprised when I see match cards and remember people that were in their 30's back when I watched still today pushing 50. I just can't believe the body can take that much damage

There's a lot of choreography and specialness, but bed of nails, barbwire, fire, fluoro tubes, falling off 20+ foot cages... There's no "safe" way to do those things.

I've been perusing a youtube channel recently, that goes over weird storylines and things through the industry. Some of these stories are so bizarre. One storyline had Big Show become obsessed with Lita, to to point of kidnapping and raping her, then she got her ass beat and had a miscarriage. HOW IS THAT A WRESTLING STORYLINE?

On the one hand, I'm glad I grew up in the 90s and stopped watching in the early 2000s because I got to see some fun fights that aren't even mentioned these days. Not allowed to have men fighting women anymore, and since the WWE machine bought the other big companies out so much wasted talent. There were so many dream matches they could have done, that would have been huge for PPV or even just storylines, and just wasted it all with garbage drama. South Park really did sum up modern wrestling well.

Last summer at a firehall show in the area, DDP was a headliner. Only name any of us recognized, and his age is really taking a toll.

The WWE is also extremely quick to destroy ties with their wrestlers. At last count, it was 15 former headliners that died and never even got a mention on a show because they died from their pain killer addictions after a 20 year career. Just written out of history of the organization. Much like watching re-released old matches, and having every mention of WWF and every single logo blurred out like a boob, like it never existed at all. Even in the videogames, they show video from classic matches and badly edited the announcer from "Word Wrestling Federation" to "WWE (with a huge pause)"

Yeah cool stuff for sure. Can't beat the pre Internet era of wrestling.

One more tidbit of the old AWA characters: although way past their active in ring days, around 1999 I met Ken Patera and Mad Dog Vachon. They were at Johnson HS hosting a card of mostly local and not well known in-ring talent. Even at that point Ken was still "big" and he actually was very nice and friendly. While talking about the older guys, he mentioned that the Crusher, who was not there for the card, was still bench pressing over 300 lbs at that time (Crusher was well over 60-65 at that time I think). Mad Dog was there but was pretty quiet. I've got a pic somewhere from that night with me and both Patera and Vachon.

Oh almost forgot, in Dec 2013, I met Sodbuster Kenny Jay at a local wrestling card. He didn't wrestle but clearly got the biggest pop of anyone, including the in ring performers that night.

I'm really not the name dropping type lol, but these older performers gave me such great memories from my childhood and they have a special place in my world.
