Here's a story for ya. Its a Friday night, its a college town. My roommate has his girlfriend down, we're looking to show her a good time. Call up a friend of mine, got a party all set up. We go to her apartment, and mingle, then we go as a group to the party--this is a group of 5 wimpy girls, my roommate, and myself.
We are walking, not far, and we're almost there. There are two guys and a girl in the middle of the sidewalk smoking their cigarettes. I immediately think.. Why wouldn't you be standing out of the way of the sidewalk? Well, anyways, we're walking past them. The girls all get by, I go to the right on the grass, he goes to the left. Out of nowhere, I hear a "thud". I look over, sure enough, the guy hit my roommate. Didn't say anything. Didn't flip them the bird. Nothing. Great. My blood immediately rises in that genetic fury that is in my veins, until I realize that these two guys are about 6'2, 250, and look like they belong in some Chicago gang. Yeah. That quickly calmed me down.
My roommate calls the cops, they take down the information (the guys walked away), and we go on our merry way. We get to the party. My roommate says he's not feeling good, and his girlfriend takes him back to the room. About a half hour later (I'm at the party) I get a text from his girlfriend that he's not doing good. Yep. He's had a concussion (to the best of my knowledge his 4th or 5th). Puking. Not too coherent, but at least coherent enough to know that he will not go to the hospital. Okay. Have it your way. Keep the ice on his head, keep waking him up every hour or so.
Its gonna be a long night. And I've gotta get up early to autocross in the morning.
If he has a confirmed concussion he probably shouldn't be sleep at all. 4th or 5th concussion? That's not good for him. Hope he recovers quickly.

Its been confirmed by me, with no medical expertise at all. And I talked with my mom, a nurse, and his girlfriend called her sister, a physical trainer on a Volleyball team, and both said that the sleeping thing is actually a fallacy. Just keep waking him every hour or so and make sure he's not getting worse.
Get some mace and then if a guy is 6'2" you spray the guy like a skunk and put him on the ground. You can make someone cry like a baby if you want. From there I'll leave the rest to you. Just remember if you lunge yourself bellow anyones center of gravity they will hit the ground.

Ah fair enough. I never actually looked into that, just sort of took it on faith. Good to know.

Thats actually a good idea. I can hold my own in a fight (I did play hockey for 13 years) but I wasn't going to take on two huge guys on my own
Ever since I almost got into it myself a few times I got some strong mace. It doesn't take a strong mind to spend 2hours a day pumping iron, so your best bet is to use tools. I call them the "implements of destruction." You know how much teeth cost? My fillings were a few hundred a pop so I don't need to loose any of my teeth.
After a good dose of pepper spray , do that Clockwork Orange singing in the rain thing. I sprayed a guy [3 on 1] and didn't have time for fancy foot work due to the 5.0 pulling a u-turn to see what all the hub bub was about . Miata is the first answer - high capacity is the second.

I'm sorry but you screwed up. I got to this sentence and expected some bow chicka wow wow or PIITB, but you blew it..
ahhh I almost sent my son to Illinois State University this fall.......but he decided to go to a smaller school in Michigan.
Campus safety is a concern everywhere. Kinda scary.

It's not that you shouldn't sleep. It's that they wake you up regularly to make sure your pupils still react to light. If they don't contract you've got problems that need care NOW.
Happened to my kid in Boston. Walking down a sidewalk with his gf. some guy steps out of the shadows and punches him in the head for no reason. The next thing he remembers is getting up off the ground and throwing a back pack at him. The guy insisted there was beer in it.
Witnesses tell a different story: the guy sucker punched my kid in the head, Ian went down in the road, the guy kicked him repeatedly in the ribs while he was down. If the guy wasn't kicking him he would have been run over by a car.
Thug's friends grab him and walk him down the streeet, Ian throws the bag at him and takes off his shirt to stop the bleeding.
Everyone parts, it's another day in the big city.
Do you have recourse on the Gang guys? Got a CCW permit? Cops gonna do anything?
Dan
1) "I don't give a berkeley what you want, you're going to the hospital now." Unless you want a dead friend, that is. Even easier if he's unconscious on the floor. Just remember that actress wife of Liam Neeson. He needs some quality time with a CT scanner.
2) CCW permit.
3) Move.

I know "small" is relative, but which one does he attend? I went to a "small" university in Michigan, it was a good experience.
Back on topic, I have had 5 or 6 concussions, mostly from snowboarding, skating, and football. Doctors told me that I have a risk of major hemorrhage....so I stopped doing those things.

Not an option in Illinois. Unfortunately.

I have rolled with a few of these guys ( I was severely fat and rusty at the time), I can attest to their abilities and their coach is top notch; he teaches some nasty clinch work. They are based in Bloomington, you should look them up. If I recall correctly it's $50 per month for the MMA classes.

mma is fun and games and all till you start to win a fight and his friend stabs you. I dont care how bad you think you are, you should never attack a group of people.

I'm not advocating senseless violence and I would never suggest ATTACKING a group of people but should you need to defend yourself, even against multiple opponents, MMA training can be very useful. I'm not trying to argue but it has worked for me in the past when I lived in a less than savory neighborhood.

We can have knives, which we both had, but these guys looked like they might have been packing heat. I like that idea of pepper spray though, and the MMA.
Be careful with the CCW, if they're Gangbangers, they CCW without the permit.
You got off easy, eh?

I'm not a big fan of carrying a knife anymore, they can be turned against you too easily.
If you do get into MMA, shoot Jed an email, he needs someone to spar with, and you're nearby :)
