My beef is with normal names spelled funny just to be different.

An acquaintance has an infant daughter named "Keiralyn" - takes my old mind a couple somersaults to figure out that they meant "Carolyn" each time I see it written.

Well, there's always the Wisconsin town that wants to name their new Government Center after their longest serving mayor, Harry Baals:

@Porksboy:

I have a similar problem- never met a person with my first name, and anywhere it's posted or referred to, shows up on google. Thankfully, most of the stuff I've done in my life is ok, but sheesh. It's weird, but doesn't have a "y" in it, so I think I'm good.

Camber...that's an awesome name. I may have to use that some day (it'll be on a dog though, since I'm not producing any kidlets at my age).

My first name is Dwight. Thank you, President Eisenhower for giving my parents a stupid idea. Until Dwight Schrute came along, nobody had ever heard of it around here. In my job I leave phone messages pretty regularly, and the call backs will ask for Blake, Duane, Wade, Wayne, White, etc but never, ever Dwight. I once picked up a girl for a date whose parents were relieved to find out Dwight wasn't exclusively a black guy's name (girl aside, that item would have negated me wanting to be a part of that family right off). Couple it with a last name that is unusual and eternally misspelled and the whole naming-your-kids-dumb-things hits close to home for me. My middle name is David (hence the screen name) and I'm seriously considering changing to that once my folks pass on.

My mom tells me the story, and swears it's true, of some twins she taught in inner city Birmingham, AL back in the 70's named Siphylus and Gonoria. I know they're not spelled like the diseases, but that's how they were spelled as names.

We named our daughter Kourtlyn Parker Hamilton, I looked and tried to get a car name, but KPH (kilometers per hour) works fine. LOL People around here try to call her Kourtland... WRONG!

E'E'Shawne... (yes, that's spelled correctly)..

Nosmo... (mother was high on opiates at the time she gave birth...)

LaVeronica

she's got a list of the winners somewhere, I'll have to dig them out.. :)

One of my sisters married a guy who last name is Brown. Although the names are nnot unsusal, her three boys all have the same initials. They are probably better of than if she followed my suggestions when they were born. Those were Charles, Leroy and James.

yeah, I have a cousin named Chase. I was about 12 when my aunt was preggo with him, so I remember being there when they were talking names. Everyone was worried that he'd get picked on like "hey guys, lets Chase him..." and so one. Good for him he grew up to be 6'6" and 260 lbs as a freshman (linebacker). But Ive known some La'Kwondah's and Da'Myqhel's in the past. I never understood why a parent would hate their kid enough to ruin their introduction to everyone they will ever meet for the rest of their lives.

I got a normal name- paul, but speaking of car names, I do have a cousin who named his kid to have the initials GTO.

and for variant spellings, I've know 4 megans in my life, all spelled : megan, meaghan, meghan, and maeghan. What's wrong with Megan?! i suppose they aren't near as crazy as some other misspellings, though.

I know another guy who named his kid Fenris. Big Sci-Fi dork.

We're pretty boring. Chloe and Phoebe. I had a pet ferret named Chloe. I like the name. When I told my Mom we were going to name her that, she remarked that was a stupid name for a child. It was a name for a pet, like Fido or Spot. She also asked how do you think she's going feel when she's 65 and people are calling her that? I replied, "How does it feel to be called Dorothy at 65?"

I have known a couple of people with this name, it is not that unusual. It is rather old and from Norse mythology in reference to the giant wolf that was suppose to be able to destroy the gods.
