interesting stats on the flu.. between 20-50,000 people die from the flu each year in the US...
It's on par with motor vehicle fatalities.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_vehicle_fatality_rate_in_U.S._by_year

I'm not losing any sleep over the Coronavirus yet, but the official story makes less and less sense every time I lose my resolve and read something from the mainstream press.
Let's just hope it originated in some wild animal market and not a bio-weapons lab, that it is contained and less dangerous than the regular old flu.
I may wear a mask when I am traveling in the upcoming weeks. Thankfully, I am do not have to travel to China, just domestic travel in the U.S.

Don't forget to factor in that the CDC tends to count pneumonia deaths as flu deaths. It seems they like to overstate the flu dangers for whatever reason.
The Chinese seem to be doing the opposite and counting many of the cornavirus deaths as pneumonia and not related to coronovirus in what looks like an effort to downplay the danger of coronovirus.

If I recall correctly (and I could be wrong), I believe that this is akin to reporting a death from an infection from a surgery to the surgery, rather than the infection. Basically, influenza knocked them down, but pneumonia really killed them. It wouldn't have (and they likely wouldn't have had pneumonia) had they not had influenza in the first place.
This could be worrying, but we have no way to verify the accuracy of statistics published from *any* source:
L to R: Nationally Confirmed Cases, Suspected Cases, Cured, Deaths
"On late Saturday evening (Feb. 1), the Tencent webpage showed confirmed cases of the Wuhan virus in China as standing at 154,023, 10 times the official figure at the time. It listed the number of suspected cases as 79,808, four times the official figure. The number of cured cases was only 269, well below the official number that day of 300. Most ominously, the death toll listed was 24,589, vastly higher than the 300 officially listed that day. Moments later, Tencent updated the numbers to reflect the government's "official" numbers that day. Netizens noticed that Tencent has on at least three occasions posted extremely high numbers, only to quickly lower them to government-approved statistics."

As always, take any "official" numbers from the Chinese government with a large grain of salt. I wouldn't be surprised if this was an "accident" by Tencent to try and get more information out.
Has China given more information to the CDC yet on this? I haven't been keeping up as much as I should, but my go-to Youtube Weatherman streams at odd times.
More news that should not be surprising:
https://www.yahoo.com/news/data-suggests-virus-infections-under-101338993.html
Looking at the data suggests that the number of cases in Wuhan was significantly under-reported, leading the percentage of fatalities to be a inflated by a fairly big factor. This makes sense: Somebody with a mild case is likely to just think it's a cold and not go see a doctor, so the hospitals are likely to get the worse cases and not ever see the mild cases.
And this also seems to fit with my overall take that if this thing got loose worldwide, it would be roughly equivalent to a second round of the flu - not a good thing or something I'd exactly dismiss, but it's the sort of epidemic where we have a pretty good idea of just how bad that would be.

Trying to picture this going down in NY rather than Wuhan.
In reply to NOHOME :
Wuhan is slightly larger than NYC.. The size of asian and Indian cities is incredible. Wuhan has about 11M folks in it.. NYC is 8-9M proper.. bigger metro, but still.

I know this. Been there.
My point being that the population is taking this rather well all things considered.

The former is pushing flu vaccine and is not above shading the facts. The latter is just trying to downplay how big the problem is, and shading the facts is part of their basic playbook.

I don't know that we can say the population is taking it well, considering how much China censors everything.
If even a fraction of the information and videos that are reportedly from Wuhan are legitimate, the situation looks pretty dire. I am wild-ash-guessing they are under reporting by a factor of 10x, but don't know that we will ever know the truth

We'll figure it out when/if we all end up with it over here.
They've quarantined another two provinces and using the stadiums in Wuhan as "hospitals" or quarantine camps.
I believe it's something like 150 million people now under quarantine.
The crematoriums are saying they're burning 100s of bodies a day.
A cruise ship just docked in New Jersey with a dozen sick Chinese nationals onboard. That cruise ship in Japan just found 42 more confirmed cases.
Numbers I saw were 400 million under orders to stay home in China.
We were planning to take a big family trip to the Phillipines this summer. The way this is spreading is making me reconsider that choice.
In reply to KyAllroad (Jeremy) :
If it makes you feel any better, I think there's an interactive map out there that shows confirmed cases and the Philipines are A-OK! Nvm. Apparently three cases now.
Found one, but not the one I initially learned about: https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6
Whether or not the Philipines actually is A-OK is up to you. I don't suggest doing a cruise while you're there or having any connecting flights in/around China.
Edit: The China numbers should be taken with a grain of salt when you look at Tencent "accidents" and reports from everyone else that isn't the government.

Got a co-worker who is is on a 21 day quarantined work from home because his daughter just came back from China.
When I came back through security at the plant this evening, security asked me if I'd recently been to China.
